Whooooooa boy, I getcha that thing would shake a few windows loose! It is awful nice work, but to be effective shouldn't it have extentions on the other side to reach into the exhaust chest and separate the exhaust flow? Are there expansion chambers on the stinger end?

Chris this system fits your engine.....see at the gallery under engines and you can see the whole powerhead and stuffers in the exhaust chest....its maybe a little easier to do this job on a rude but......
Its not a full expansion camber but the megafon only.

John Lentzkov built a exhaust set-up for a Merc V6 with long stingers going out of the cowling. It was featured on S&F a long time ago. I am sure it is still somewhere on the server.

Yeah, I saw that one. That aspect has always intrigued me, how to get better ehaust tuning in our V6's. Snowmobiles regularly get 125hp from a 700cc twin with a single pipe, and all of it comes from the exhaust. Other than that, they're running what we run. Reed valve 2 strokes.

Yes... John Lentzkov showed us that he could get a good boost of top end power, maybe a PCU on that engine could have showed even better performance. A exhaust valve tougheter with the expansion camber is a proven success...not seen a outboard with that....who is going to be the first?
We allso learned that the 3 to 1 system has its benefits when it comes to a wide torque band , maybe a refinment to this system
can be a nice improvment.......

Let's not lose track of the fact that conventional V6 exhaust systems are in fact 3 into one systems. The item pictured is more similar in function to an exhaust chest/tuner/mid section arrangement than one might imagine from the first glance. The individual expansion chambers like John designed are altogether different.
One other important difference to note when comparing snowmobiles or motorcycles to high performance outboards is the use of a variable transmission. Since the only variation available in an outboard is prop slippage at lower speeds, they won't work as well in a variety of applications with a high horsepower/very narrow powerband.
Mercury tried a prototype exhaust on the team boats that was abandoned early in the same season way back in the 70's. I think if they'd found possibility for improvement with continued development we'd probably have seen more of it.
This system did re enter the midsection in the area of the snout on a champ mid, but it was likely only for mounting strength and possibly noise control.

Espen, you need to go to races more
south in Europe. Arens in Germany has been doing
just that for a few years in the small outboard classes:

Yes Mark ! Nice engine ,did not know that .
I was thinking of the v6.....

The three into one pulse tunning is most effective aside from the expansion chamber.

MODIFIEDOUTBOARD Shure looks like a interesting project you got there ! Is it a jet ski tuned pipe ?

For a 3 cyl OMC.

you can get 270 h.p. out of 1000 c\cs. It takes a bunch of good parts [money], but it can be done. The trick of coarse is VERY efficiant exhaust management. At least a 3 into one on each side. However 3 into ones usually make good tourque & sacrifice high R.P.M. horsepower. A 6 chamber set-up would be the best for horsepower. I've been thinking about a R.A.V.E. valve outboard for years. It would R E A L L Y work on an outboard . You could port sky-high & get your bottom end back with a .150 thick removeable exhaust port roof. This would make the 6 chamber system gutsy on the bottom, a bear in the mid-range & UNFREEKINBELIEVEABLE on the top-end I.M.H.O. Hmmm... lets seeeee.... 270 per litre.... 3 liters.........

This is one we did a Taylor Marine, only 3 cylinder it hit ready hard.
Mad Efi , MSD Jet I drove it 48 mph and the dam thing is quick I think Travis has got it to 50 MPH.
I think the exhaust works!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never seen a 3 into 1 chamber.
What kind of ignition is on that motor?

Both Mike Schmidt (250cc Yamaha conversion) and Arens (250 and 500cc custom built) have been using R.A.V.E. valves on small outboards for years.
Judging by the performance of the GRM (Rossi) 500cc 4 cylinder, I would say that 270 hp/1,000 cc has been achieved. GRM's without R.A.V.E. valves consistantly beat Arens with them. Both of these motors use varying length expansion chambers. Schmidt's R.A.V.E. valves were tied into the chamber length mechanisms.

But, 270 hp per liter might not be achievable on big bore motors

Different motors, but PSI shows 230hp on a twin 1200 and 250hp for a 1200 triple.

I'm guessing they run longer than one race day though, in a sled anyway. How about 350hp with a 1800 triple:D Near 120hp per hole, that is cool. If you could stand that motor up and make only 250hp you would have something.

In 1100cc hydro & runabout racing - stacked and back to back 500cc opposed 4's have been used going back 30 years.
Current 500cc GRM's are pulling close to 150 hp ..... 290+ hp/liter
Anyone for a ride in a 100 pound 12 foot runabout with 300 hp?

Hey Wayne, when you going to make one of those exhaust for a 3.3L V6?

Bombardier is saying thier new 1 litre twin will be producing about 165 170 Hp in stock form with stock pipes so i would say with some tweaking there should be some big numbers up there. And i guess if you run it on alky like the pro motors Sam's talking about then the numbers would be even greater.

You are making such good products and improving on them all the time! I just can't keep up with all your new stuff!!!
See you in a couple weeks!
I have some more info for you & I will give you a call!

Wayne don't give the old man any more power! He can't handle what he has!(LOL;) )
If he wants that, then I want double pipes off of each cylinder for a total of 12! That would rock & look even better!!!!

We make it for all motor but we use 3 cylinder boxes so it works well on 3 cylinder OMC

wayne, the boat is really getting faster every time i take it out! we just keep tweaking the fuel curve. then with the new head and some good fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!! holy chit!!! it averaged 54 constantly with my driver, but it is a real handful to drive, it accelerates faster than any other jet boat i have seen !!!!;)
