I found this 135 merc that needs rings for $500 obo. I was just wondering if just rings commonly go, or is it a indicator that a total rebuild is needed? Also, is this the same block as the 115?
Thanks:)

First it's a 70 or 71. Have you checked the compression ? I haven't seen too many inline six's that you could just drop new rings in. You should change reeds, bearings and seals at the same time. You will need to pull it apart to check the pistons and cyls.

I think I'm gonna pass on it. I have all winter too find a motor. Rick, I would definetly buy through you for my parts:cool:

I think $500. for a 70/71 model engine that needs the powerhead built on is a lot of money. They are good ole' engines though. Maybe if you could run a compression test and see if the cyl's are just low and fairly even it'd be worth taking a chance, especially if the OBO got down to a couple hun. If it's got one or two that are real low, chances are rings won't fix it and it's probably not worth boring and buying pistons unless you want to have over a thou in a 30 year old motor.

In 70 & 71 (the only 2 years of the 1350 as Crazy pointed out) the 1150 and 1350 blocks were the same. The differences were the plastic diffuser in the middle of the carbs, and the stops on the reed valves, both of which were used as restrictors.

a hundred bucker to me, run a compression test, if its even and low maybe it just needs to be run or a bunch of engine tuner. If you're gonna ring it count on 6 pistons and a bore job. As well as everything else. If the guy thinks it needs rebuild just because its down on power look in the bearing carrier and see if the tuner is laying in there, they were known to drop out and plug up the exhaust. Still it's only a 200 bucker then if you just need a cheap engine for something.

I was under the impression you could buy a good running one for 500-800? And the best ones are the later ADI 115s, the '73 1500, '74 1400? I paid $900 and got the boat and trailer free I think. At least I got to run it a couple seasons before the transom started flexing too much to trust. Nice adjustable trailer I could get 300+ out of with a little paint slapped on. I like that stupid old Checkmate open bow too much to landfill it just yet though, lots of room in there.

Like most of that old stuff; you will buy one then run into someone a week later who sold or bought the same thing for half that...

Oops, you gonna make me research that again.....I thought they down rated the 1500 to 1400 or 140, but I bet not in '74 right? Later when the V6 150 came out, then it went 115 after but still the same motor as the 1500 aside from the pistons' compression and ADI/carbs/etc. It was the later 140 I was thinking of.

What I meant is, the faster inline should be a '73 up 150, or the highest rated one made that year up until they quit making them. Those should have the boost port, run near 6k rpm, and be available to find reasonable as a common motor if you are going to pick one, aside from the XSs/race motors/etc. Hope I'm right as I might pick up another one if I find one.

I didn't even bother calling the guy once it was stated that it couldn't be a 73'. The inlines are harder to find in that price range here, most of em' need a rebuild or lu. I have been keeping my eyes open, and this is honestly the only one I've seen for sale up here. Probably gonna have to buy an old boat motor trailer package, send the boat to the dump, sell the trailer, and keep the motor. I even have the tilt and trim for the inlines

A friend of mine has taken 20+ hulls to the landfill, sold the motors and trailers and made cash. Kept the stuff he wanted. Sad but true, you can often get it cheaper that way.

My Checkmate was $900, so I think I could get $300 or close out of the nice trailer. That would be $600 for the 1500 that runs fine. It does need the lu resealed if I use it again. I think that was plenty of cash for what I got, but I could get my money out of it here. Of course I could not find one then, but have seen others since.
