View Full Version : 1990 Looper mods? (no fingerporting)

What kind of HP could I expect to achieve out of the 1990 225 Looper without the fingerporting?
I've read the Stoker article and it is very impressive indeed. The only problem is, once it's been fingerported, I can't repair (a burnt piston) without shipping it out to Al again. Ideally, I would like to be able to use my stock pistons and in-house work if possible. Any machining I would like to have done at a local shop. (port widening etc.) I would LOVE to have one of Stoker's 300 HP motors but my budget dictates that I squeeze as much as possible out of her on my own workbench with a little (alot) of help from Dexter (BL) and a local machine shop.
I'm talking about cleaning up the gluelines, matching the casehalves, cleaning up the transfers, opening up the rod slots, balancing the pistons & rods........ reed cage, reed and intake flow work, velocity stacks and re-jetting? I already have the 2.7 heads, plugged exhaust reliefs and 145 lbs of compression.
Also, is it of any benefit to widen and chamfer the exhaust ports without those fingerports?
Basically, can it be made to produce @ 260 reliable horsepower as a 6000- 6500 RPM lake motor without those fingerports?
If no, how much HP can be expected this way?
Thanks

I know it sounds like a lot of money to send a block out and have the port work done but unless your buddies have a good foredom type flexshaft motor and some very expensive 90 degree heads to go on it you cant do much port work on a looper block.Ive seen bl's work on here and it looks nice but x flows are very easy to port all the work can be done from the outside with the covers off.You cant get a std 1/4 90 deg die grinder in the cyl and do precision work especially on the intakes they can be used for hogging out material but when it comes time to get the angles right and finishing out the ports you need the small (expensive)stuff. Just doing your exhaust and clean up would help but thats a lot of money to tear it down for a minimal gain because you already have most of the basic stuff done. The finger ports can be done by hand benkeith did it just takes a long timeand a bunch of carbide burrs. just my opinion anyway but do it all or do nothin. L&S doesnt sell the big bore kits anymore. Yes they do have them on the website but they dont offer the kits at all or heads for that matter. They are just selling off what they have in stock and its not much anymore.
Monty sells big bore kits?
Who else? Acie?

Talked to gordon a week ago about this, yes he has had weisco make him a 3.3 liter piston for the OMC lopper, they are a little over a 100 bucks a pop. BUT you have to have a aftermarket sleeve made for It , another 100 a pop. But the pistons will work with the looper rods and crank that we have now. I might be a little high on the sleeve price but damn close. Also the block has to be punched to 4.065 to take the bigger sleeve , also laker is right, land and junk dont offer the big bore kits anymore, they used TRW pistons In the kit, lots of problems, how you doing HighFlyer, call sometime.

I'll ask him and see if he minds if I tell first. I not sure it is "avaliable" as a kit yet, but I'm sure it will catch on. The bore is not the only place to pick up displacement.....

Forkin, it's in his gallery on the By-U-Boyz site so other than specifics, it caint be too secret;)
For those interested, look at "Evin Rude" 's gallery.
The parts are built but I think he is still testing.
A little birdy told me 224 cu.ins or 3.73 liters!! That's bigger than the original V-8"s!!!
B.Mac, on replacing finger ported pistons, you can drill them your self if you get specs on where to do it.
H20Perf is right too. I did my motor my self and have almost as much in carbide burr's as what I could have had some one who knew what the hell they were doing could have done it for!!
P.S., I use the extended arbor burr's to hepl get into the ports. 6" I believe.
Think I had between $3 and $400. just in burr's to do it right!!
