I'm setting up an 18' Talon with a 2.4 200hp. Anyone got any thoughts/comments/tips?? I know this is an uncommon boat and there isn't much info out there on it.
Thanks

I ran one for a few years with a 150 omc gt,then went to a 2.5 245 hp merc.Very well built but you will get dusted by an STV or Mirage with equal power.I ended up running a 28 hoss triton on the merc at just under the century mark. These boats can be blown over, almost went swimming in mine once.Ask boatless he was with me.I remember they seem to be very sensitive to wieght ie. make your passenger get in the back when you need all the top end speed. later and good luck hf...

HF-thanks for the reply. Mine originally had a 150 Evinrude Intruder, good for 72 or so. Sold the 150 and put a 200 on it for rigging purposes (tired fishing motor). Presently running 80 at 6200 with a small blade 26 chopper. Plan to rebuild the motor, repaint and upholster the boat over the winter. Not looking to be king of the lake, just something reasonable fast and fun to drive. Not suprised at the almost blowover, its got a lot of width for its length.

Sorry talon 2.5 I've been in the repair zone. I got mine running in the mid to upper 80's until a bad bracket on the oil tank caused a real pile of parts( anyone need some smoked pistons or crank ) after a couple of hard left turns. I'm running a 28" 4 blade prop with great results but Like I was told I need more set back to keep the nose down.I'm in the middle of a major rebuild from the steering (dual) to adding the new set back (12") and a manual 5" lift. I'm hoping with the new power and parts that I should have no problem running it into the low to mid 9's on good water. Still trying every prop I can .
Of course the water will be hard soon (ICE) and I'll have to do my break in and testing in the spring!!!!

i see your in the new hampshire lakes area.......laconia nearby? ive been to weirs beach before :D

Ya! Weirs is only 30 min tops away, I go there Quiet abit just to hand out but I hammer mostly on lake Sunapee (15 mins away) or if I want to go fast theres Mascoma Lake thats only at the end of the driveway it's pretty cool for testing because there's no one else going fast to bother me (fast relative to me or you, fast guys now run in the low 60's ), I know most of the locals on the lake and its about 4 miles long and 2 mile wide at the wide area. It also has a small island great for doing laps around, it keeps you in the good water even on the windy days. Hopfully the ice will come and go quickly.
I talked to Rob Wilkens at Talon, he sent a bunch of stuff to me.In that package he sent me the origanal bill of sale, factory photos and flyers. My 18 is the one in the bottom left of the page ,it was used in all the photo shoots , magazine adds and was the one that they used for testing at the factory #109 And the only one with a see thru wind screen. if you give me the # on your boat I'll tell you what I can about it from my paper work
Hope to hear from you soon

T-2.5, sounds like you may have the same 2-wheel addiction I have, never been to laconia but I'm a regular at Myrtle Beach.
Much less crowded than Daytona.
Hottrucks-I've also heard that Rob is very helpful. Maybe I'll see if he can give me the history on mine.
Thanks for both your replies, nice to find some other Talons out there.

Maybe we could hook up some afternoon so I can see your speed racer?I'm just down there to bum around for a week, allthough I do need to spend a couple of days with Mickey.I get down there as much as I can and my bike winters there.Myrtel beach is part of my return trip back to some cold water!

I'm riding an 03 softtail with some added chrome and pipes. When it gets back to tampa it going to get the 1550 kit. It's got about 7k on the speedo but riding time this summer has been limited to non boat days.I picked it up on 1-2-3 and left tampa with 2800 in the middle of april and only rode a feww times. It's a hell of a comute to ride for the weekend but it gives me another reason to get to fla and warm up. Its been to maine a couple of time for some rallies and a toy ride but not much else. If I just had a harly powered tunell!!!!!!
Hummmmmmmmmmm?

OK, my Talon thread has turned into a Harley chat room......No Problem!! I'm presently riding a '00 FLHT, after having a 92 Sportster and a '99 FXST. Miss my FXST, but I ride for hours at a time and my girlfriend was good for about 20min at a time on the back of the Softail, you know, lowered, custom seat, trick looking, terrible ride. Anyhow, we go to Myrtle Beach every spring and most fall rides, The fall rally is becoming preferred by many due to the growth of the size of the spring rally.
The Talon has been sitting in the backround for almost a yar, so I am getting that project going over the winter. So, I'm keeping my eyes open for tips on set-up. Lots of Mirage and STV jockeys around, but not many of us.

what do you both have right now for current set-up?
mine if you looked at the link i posted has 7 inches of setback right now and runs pretty sweet with it, gonna go up a 1/4 inch here the next time i take it out and i'll let ya both know where the propshaft is in relation to the boat :D
i posted digital pics and have a digital camera if you both need additional pics of my set-up or anything
i'll help the best i can
mine runs 93 easy and have hit 97.9 on gps before with a different set-up and working back toward that, i usually dont run full out, but nice to know what it is capable of if i feel the need :D
either of you have digital cameras? or have access to one?

Crap riding season is over and so is boating but with any luck I get a hot ride in a Talon and get to take my bike to get there??
(ut humm T2.5 hint hint)
Ive got great news my motor is done Yea!!!!!!!!!!
now all I have to do is put it back into it's cowl add the two new steering cables( which I hope you never have to do, it is such a beer I meen bear? the space between the dash and the hood section doesn't allow enough space to allow the nut on the cable to clear after you disconect it from the rack. A lot of time should be left for this job and lots of gental prying will go a long way in raising the hood section to clear).
As for my set up I don't have a set back or jack plate but I run in the solid 80's with my old stock 2.5 and a 4 bade 28 (sorry don't remeber the brand but it was a chopper style) the motor is on the 3rd hole from the top about 3/4" lower than the center sponson step. My hull was the mold for future boats but I'm not sure where everyone elses steps are? I do know that any before mine #109 where more forward.
I run the stock gas tank and my Battery is in pass. side cubby hole all the way forward.I'm looking at a 10" setback with an ajustable manual jack up to 5" CHEAP not free but Cheap so I may try that in the spring
There was a spare fuel tank that someone cut in the center of the front seat foot rest (under the dash) that would carry 3 gallons that will be replaced with a new OIL TANK AND 432 FASTENING DEVISES TO STOP IT FROM ROLLING OVER!!!!! This will move more weight forward and allow me to keep an eye on it. Nothing I would normally do but the hole is there.
My advise is try every thing you can with out going broke. If I can help with proping I will (I recon props and can buy whole sale and will pass the savings on) I'll do this for other Talon 18 owners only!!! There are so few of us!!!!?
Sorry about pics I will try to get someone to take some for me as I would like them to. But they will have to be on the trailer my lake shots where scheduled for a week after my motor decided to yard sale all over the lake. F&^%#^$K
Look foward to hearing from you !!
p.s I gone from thurs. to sun but now that I'm back on line I'll stay curent as I can!
Thanx Jeff

my seats are in tandem, i cut and re-did the dash for center steering, my battery is in the rear behind the back seat (old driver side) along with the trim pump in the rear centered
the interior side panels have been removed by me and replaced with lightwieght aluminum painted with white epoxy
the center of the front bulkhead is cut out for access into the bow
7 inch manual jackplate with at this point in time propshaft 1/2 inch above the pad (if i remember correctly)
motor is mounted on the jackplate in the lowest holes (highest it can go) and i have only a half inch left the jackplate can go up
it has the 2 inch spacers between the jackplate and the motor for a total of 9 inches of setback
i usually run a 30 pitch hoss triton 3 blade
carburated 2.5 with minor mods that i built a few years ago
dual cable steering, hot foot....... you know the normal stuff

Hey Guys-
Thanks for the replies-good info and good reading. I am set up on a 5" manual jack with the point 1/2 - 3/4 below the pad, don't have a precise number as I have to slide the boat back on the trailer to get my fixture on it.
The boat interior is still stock configuration with the batt and oil tank behind the back seat. The motor is a 2.4 200hp of an offshore fishing boat with LOTS of hours, but it still runs 80 on the Gaffrig @ 6200 with a small blade 26 chopper. Lower unit is a 1.87 CLE with the steel shaft. Haven't tried too many props yet as I am just getting back into this project after getting rid of the Evinrude 150 that was originally on it.
I'll try to get some dif pix on soon, but that damn camera frustrates me sometimes so please be patient.
I like the boat as it is fun to drive, unique, and rides good for what it is. Its a shame they didn't catch on as it is a well built boat.
As for my other passion, we rode to Williamsburg for lunch Saturday, the leaves are in full fall colors and temp was unseasonably warm. The parkway was full of bikes grabbing that last bit of nice weather.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Hey t2.5 I noticed that you also moved the steerin cables so they exit in the rears is that correct? also I think , according to Rob at Talon I have the only one with a windshield? It was replaced with a fairing as the windshield(tinted or smoked) was so expencive to build. If you look at the pic on the front of the fly (bottom left /T-18) the boat in that pic is mine!If you look close you'll see that if you where 2' tall you could look thru it.
As for the jack plate / setback that 10" I hope won't be to much so I'll go after it a little harder and get it in my palms.
Like I said I'll try to get some pics when I take it out but there will probablly be snow around it before I get a chance with the holidays and all.
99 stay off the trim button with out a jack I noticed with mine that it's pretty easy to lift the nose to the point that bad things can happen in a hurry!!! Expecially if you get a stray head wind !!
Play hard but be careful Dad allway said "Don't race convertables"
But what does he know!!
p.s. You suck! I took my bike out for the last time on sat and froze my F^$^K'n A off even with my soft lowers and chaps!!
You don't have to rub it in!!!
Ha Ha!!
p.s.s T is that goofy guy in the boat you??
99fxst99
11-25-2003, 09:53 AM
ht-I have found soft lowers and chaps to be a bad combo-funnels tha cold breeze right to your balls, and ,you know, when your balls get cold EVERYTHING is cold!!
T2.5-you probably don't even have a pair of chaps down there.
I rode from Ft. L to Marathon and up to Winter Haven last Feb, had a blast calling home and making everyone jealous.

Yea I'm gonna need a sneaker on the back when I get down to tampa I've got 7k on it and thats about all you get. A $100 tire ain't worth a crash. Been there done that and tore the shirt up !!!!!
Yes that is what I meant? Is that something that you changed? Because of the set back ? that was a though of mine I don't want to hack up this boat!!! I also noticed the engine wind deflector is that you to? did you put it in place of the rear pad behind the back of the rear seat? I'm trying to keep it as stock as I can. It's not the buget it's that it's the first one and I like the idea of keeping it that way.paste on or retro fit are OK but I hate to drill holes.
My other bad habit in the winter is building street rods so now you know where that came from!! I'm building a 35 international P/U (dually with air ride and a stout small block(383)and a four on the floor with a 5th under the seat) to haul my boat for next year I'm 2 yrs into it but getting close enough to making it drive that spring isn't out of the question by ay means, and yes I saw it You should have seen my 76 C car I just sold that, it was my old high school car bought it back for awhile after 11 years with only 4k more miles(327 4spd 3:83 10's on pumpgas and a sniff)
Boy do you side track me are you my alter ego??

I'm lost a little and this is new to me with my powerhead off it sound like a good time to do this. If I remove the can are there any perfomance gains and how much? What are the effects on carberation ? and exhaust flow? if it's getting out easyer than how about making it get in easyer any good tips that are quick and and easy for my stock cowl? Good to see you can cap them off I'm a regular a Db testing in NH ( me and the fish cops are on first names now ) you can only be 89Db at 50' at WOT. and don't ask about the test you break every law you can imagine when you test.
I also have a big block 24' chapparal Villian with straight pipes out the transom (need I say why I get complaints at night when ripping across the lake) I look like an aircraft carrier with search lights on the bow and 8-10 drunks hanging every where and everytime I stop someone wants to cum for fish!!!!
Talon2.5
11-26-2003, 06:21 AM
all the holes in the rear for cables and hydraulic hoses (used to have a bobs hydraulic jackplate on it) were there when i bought the boat
if the cops are that bad up there i probably wouldnt mess with the exhaust can, just removing the can and not cutting the holes wont achieve anything and when the exhaust mod is done you wont pass the decibal test ;)
if you do the exhaust the way i posted you dont have to re-jet but removing the airbox and putting on velogity stacks (if your carbed) would be in order
i dont mess with dry stacking a lake boat, race boat.... yes
as far as the stock clamshell cowl, theres not much room for improvement there, get a bobs fiberglass one piece cowl or look for a good deal on one in the misc parts threads here
if your running a 2 piece mid-plate i would suggest 1 of 2 things.....go with a 1 piece plate......or........get solid upper mounts before putting it back together
ok.......on to.......went for a short bike ride last night, was chilly with no jacket but not so chilly it was a problem, it was nice!! it was a short ride though since i got home late from work, played around with making a highway peg deal for it, came out ok but need to buy a CHROMED set that fits the bike, i just made this one to see how i liked it and if it was worth buying a set, found out it is :D
been busy on a harley message board also :D
