Lower pan on my V-6 OMC is a plastic/composite that smells like fiberglass when I grind it.
It has a crack on one side that goes top to bottom and I want to repair it before I paint it.
How should I do this so it does'nt come back??
Thinking I should "V" out the crack on the inside and fill it with Marine Tex and laminate another piece on top of it.
Am I close??
Thanx guys!

If its plastic, like the Merc ones, it can be repaired at Born Again Fairings in San Dimas 909 592-7638. I sounds like it isn’t pure plastic so I’m not sure if they fix it.

If ist' glass you should see some kind of patterning if you sand it a little. The crack should also look like a glass composite.

If it is glass, Vee it out and lay increasing widths of glass in the Vee. You want the crack to be glass again. eventually you'll have a layer or so across the broken area.

I read this from West epoxy info. For plastic heat it just before it would melt. ( you want to slighty burn not melt it) This does something to the plastic. Scuff it then bond it with epoxy as if it was glass.

Had the same problem with the damaged pan for my Evinrude. I got out the dremel, did a little grinding and scuffing and then used some POR-15 "epoxy". Three boating seasons later and everything is still holding up. See ya later.

Some of the earliest plastic cowls had the really fine fiberglass cloth on the inside seam. I assume this was done with epoxy instead of polyester resin. I've scuffed and repaired several this way over the years. I've never tried Techno's heat idea, but I like it.
