My dad wants more power on his mate and cant decide on either the 2.5 or 300 merc.Besides the weight difference witch would be a better motor for him.The boat is a 1980 enchanter and it is perfect condition. Thanks

if it were mine and i had the cash i would definately go with the 300 and even a 300x if they are available.the 2.5's are really made for lighter weight hulls like tunnels.i believe john tiger has said that longer, heavier hulls like yours can benefit from the added weight of the 300.it requires less setback to work and it supposedley is not as tempremental as the 2.5 can be.i think with the 300 on that hull you just bolt it on to the transom with no jackplate and the balance will be about right.good luck with it.

How which ever engine you choose works out! I have an Enchanter also, and have considered both those engines. I
would also be inclined to go with the 300, as I would feel more
comfortable with a bigger block, and lower rpm's to produce the
hp. I bet with the 467lb weight and 4-6" of setback, that hull
would fly nicely. Probably a sportmaster case would be the way
to go, as top speed should be in the mid to upper 80's. Also, to
much setback is a problem for that hull, as it will dunk the engine
coming off plane. Talked with Mike at Checkmate, and he suggested no more than 8" of setback with the 3.0L, and added
knee braces to tie the transom in with the stringers. Let us know
how your dad makes out!
