I normally go as cheap as possible but I want to pull out all the stops with I rebuild the next couple engine's. My quesiton is should I replace undamaged pistons on a chrome bore 2.4L Merc just because? I want to do everything that I should but I don't want to waste money for no reason at all.
I did a emergency repair yesterday to get our towboat back in the water. SO I want to have a ready to go powerhead for the next break down

JESUS, triton....ya know what happens to cheap rebuilds????????? THEY COME APART SOON ENOUGH THAT EVBERYBODY LOOKS AT YOU! Reman cranks, cheap pistons, aftermarket bearings/gaskets have no place in something you are gonna see again......buy quality parts and spend time on prep/assembly...be thourough or be screwed.

I'm normally in a rush to get the boat back in the water but right now I'm getting engine's ready before I need them so I want to do it right. I know rushing is what causes me more work so that is why I'm asking.

If you are an outboard or any type of mechanic as you claim you are. Read the service manual and mic the pistons. nuf said have a good one

I was aware of the magic of a micrometer but I was asking for a general consinsis of other mechanics if they have an opinion if all the pistions should be replaced for good measure when doing a compleate rebuild.

Cheap rebuilds are nothing but quicker failures........
