Well I figured it out by cheating...I saw what you named the image. Is there one more reed per cylinder than its sister motors?

I think you found the missing 5 hp, didn't you?

Dave S

Cheating is not a good thing.:D You ain't gonna get this one easy. Maybe Sherlock will But most old guys weren't around then. Keep TRYINN:cool:

Speaking of cheating....

Sam:

You have a 402X???? I wanna see pictures of that!!!! Post some will you?

As for the reed cage in the pic, you will need a crank lab seal, wouldn't you?

George

I didn't say it was together did I? :o A picture of it would look much like any other basket of parts and they aren't much to look at when they are together anyway........just a 35 adapted to a D tower and foot.

This reed cage is impossible for anyone to identify. I'll give you a hint. It came out of a Mercury 4 cylinder Looper, circa 1942. Some things never change.

Dave, just tell us what it is/where you found it

Dave S

:D I'll give you a hint...it's not an outboard reed cage, but it is Mercury Kiekhaefer. You really have to dig into history for this. Here's another picture to help you out.

It wouldn't be that air cooled boxer twin he built for a aircraft drone would it? The one with the water pump impeller for a fuel delivery pump for the injection system? :p

George

Dave S

Very good, and you knew about the fuel pump.;) I found it on E BAY, just the crank and some bores, someday maybe I will find more of this great stuff that was shot down for practice. If old man merc made this he could have made a 2.5 back in 1942. It has the same bore size, LOOPER, even fire crank, FI system and nice castings. And you asked where the GREAT ONES are?

Dave:

It helps to work in the aircraft industry. I saw a complete one once, in Oskosh at the EAA fly in. The guy did not know what he had, but would not sell it to be no matter how much I begged. And I begged, oh how I begged!

It is a nice piece of kit, just as you said. I will see if I can find the photos that I took of it and post them.

Did anyone else notice the torch/burn pattern next to the spark plug ... looks like this thing had serious turbulence-swirl

Thanks, Dave! Cool stuff!

Dave S
09-09-2003, 06:21 PM
Hey Sam, you are reading into the burn pattern with out knowing the cause. If you had the part in hand, you could understand the cause. It is because they cast in two spark plug bosses as to have a right and left bank on the V. There is a lack of cooling fins in that area, just a blob of aluminnnim.:D NEAT stuff and to think back then too. Come on now Sam do your research, and get the USA pattern office pixs. The reed cage is a larger copy of the L6 style ,or do I have that backwards??

Amazing,
Loop charged and fuel injected V 4. Wonder why they didn.t adapt to marine use, Then again a drone has a life span of just a few minutes - maybe tha answer lies there. Maybe a drone crashed into OMC test site.
What;s the V angle? Looks a bit narrow.

Dave, I did some reserch and found out what your mystery motor is .... the one with the pulley for a belt .... it is a Keikhaefer chain saw chain sharpener motor. Since chain saws are often used way out in the boonies and generators were real clunky back then Kiekhaefer made a gasoline powered chain sharpener. The grinding wheel was probably right next to the motor and you didn't know they belonged together.

The reason Kiekhaefer and Brusnwick persisted with the carbed crossflows for so long even while more advanced technology existed was because crossflows have the super low and mid grunt needed by most fishing boats to get over plane.

Target drones get cat launched and get to run WFO for their whole life, a pretty easy fuel curve to predict. Long live Ensign Nolo!

I found some crashed/blown up drone parts at 29 Palms in 1965.
They were on the artillery range scattered in the sand. You would need a metal detector and an ordinance man to find any pieces, hoping to not trigger anything else in the process. The cylinders were chrome plated with etching like the old 2.4 EFI and early Porsche 4 cylinder engines of the 50's. It was a neat find but I couldn't take any parts.

I guess you old guys know Ted Jones was EC's drone man in the 40's. When I lived in Calif in 67 I used to have very interesting talks with him at Skip Talbots house..he was a regular...and a very neat person...

What is his name? I believe he was from Ohio and the boat is a Kitson. The race may have been Kankakee (not the Nationals then) I think he was a buddy of Bill Chatfield and Kenny Stevenson. Can't remember his name though.

You guys found that on E Bay. I was hoping to be able to buy it with no compition. I hope RACEMAN didn't see it. Any one want to take a ride to minnisota?

I will ride if we can pickup a boat in NJ. Rick:D

Not to be direspectful but I probably saw some of you guys race if you raced in NJ. But I was a kid and now over half a century in age. I know Dave S and Sam are old. :D my father race hydros in Red Bank NJ. No disrespect intended on age but dad raced before WW2 and in mid 50s and late I would go to the races in Barnegut Bay. I enjoy the wealth of knowledge that you all have exhibited. I will make some of Sams Mark 75H races this year and hope to have the privelege to meet some of you. Rick
