I have a 1995 200 Johnson that has started to backfire
but only when it first fires over. Was wondering what
can cause this and what I need to do to fix it? Otherwise it runs
perfect, no miss, sputter, and it will fire up the rest of the day on
the first turn of the key without another backfire. By the way it is a backfire thru the exhaust.
Thanks for any help.

Your centre magnet on the flywheel could have moved putting the timing out which is exaggerated when cold with Quickstart.

What would I look for to be wrong with plugs? Hope its not reeds just put new boysens in about 6-8 months ago. Just so happen bought them from Rickracers. Thanks for the good deals on all my parts. Could it possibly be a chipped reed or could it be a little lean? Thanks guys for all the help!

If it were reeds I would expect a lean sneeze rather than backfiring. Replacing plugs is always an easy cheap place to start, however my experience is plugs tend to be pretty reliable these days.

What would be the best plug to go back with NGK
or Champion? Will check out magnet and timing to be on
safe side.
Thanks,

The old rule of thumb: Backfire thru the intake is lean,
thru the pipes is rich. Good luck, Steve

I never could get them to last in my motors. I always use NGKs. Your plugs may tell you that you have a carb flooding, or float level perhaps a bit too high. Unless you've been running lean, you shouldn't have problems with new reeds.
