Douglas Marine would say 118-120 with 300X's. :D

They would also say 112-116 with 2.5's.

From a buddy who sells Skaters -

118 is the best number to date.

That is hauling the mail for a 28' with bone stock factory warranty motors.

Just think - you can buy the 3 year extented. Three years of running wide open without worrying about where the money would come from if they blow. How cool is that?

I would really like to here what T2x's opinion is of this set up.
What would it do to a 28 Skater, in relation to speed and handling.

I here you are restoring a wing, mybe we can get the boys at Scream and Fly to do a feature on the process and out come of this endeavor.........

Long Island GPS readings (especially in the Great south bay) add about 10-20MPH. Something due to the wettness of the water, and the lightness of the air.

jerry says sorry ryan , sick nicks skater has never see 120mph , that crate is lucky to see 116mph , jerry saw a 24 progression smoke past him the other day !!!!!

just wondering is Jerry the same guy that bought an engine cover from Nick and never paid for it? INSTEAD of taking about him maybe he should pay up or shut up!
Hey Nick I'll give you $900.00 for that cover and really give you the money, not broken promises..............

Okay......here ya' go. Nick Casaula's (Sick Nick)28 Skater/300X has done a hair over 120 on a number of occasions ( two separate GPS units..... either he or Joey Imprescia driving) These motors are stock and have been used by Mercury to do various CPU tests..... (most of which had modifications to improve idle speed) To my knowledge he has done a limited (not extensive) amount of prop testing and as of the end of last season had not run his thinnest blades.

My 28 with 2.5's(stock O/S race) has been north of 116...BUT.... I was alone and running on fumes..... in flat calm conditions into a very slight breeze. I used a bit of trim though I never let it get squirrely ....1:87 gears
14 3/4 x 32 lab Mercs... 8100 RPM ........

On most days below 90 degrees....with a moderate load and a passenger. You can count on 110-112.

The difference's pro and con..........on 28 Skaters........IMHO

300x's:

Pros

Don't have to mix oil and gas.
Have higher sustained top end and load carrying capability
Rig with "Smart" technology

Cons

More tail weight makes them less stable in rough water.
Questionable durability

2.5's

Pros

Great handling
Better durability
Sound better
Can be modified more readily than 300 x's (if you are prepared to create the occasional "grenade")

Cons

Oil gas mixing
acceleration issues with heaviest loads

I know of two 28's with 2.5's that have run over 120 as well, but both have had extensive motor work, thinned props and stripped hulls to do it.

Hope this helps.

T2x

P.S. The "Wing" is coming along nicely

So what we have learned here is on a 28' skater the 300x is worth maybe 3-5mph? Also the 300x are much more civilized.

That 28 with with 300's would have to turn 34 pitch props at thier red line of 6300 to make 115. My experience with these motors tells me there is very little chance of that happening without modification.

A guy I know in Atlanta has a 28 with 300's and is running 105. His best buddy has the same boat with 300X's and is running 116. They have the same set up and have switched props etc.

That is the difference we have seen everytime a 300 has been replaced with a 300X. 10-12% increase in mph - all other things being equal.

Please note that the above refers to Pro max 300's

300x's can run over 7000 RPM.....

Civilised only in fuel/oil mixing and noise...... My 2.5's actually idle and shift better than 300 x's.

I just returned from the Lake Rescue Shoot out this past weekend. The 28 Skaters top speeds ranged between 106-111 (These are real world conditions, hot summer day, etc). Top speeds through this course is measured through a trap not a blip on a gun or GPS. One of the boats had 300x the others were 2.5's. It was great to watch the 28's run! It was obvious that the owners of the 28's I saw understood the importance of a balanced setup. Many of the people that were with me agreed that these boats were designed to go straight and fast.
