What does a water pump job involve? Do I need any special tools?

I've learned all kinds of good stuff about outboards and setup, and haven't had to do much of any work on my motor, but my water pump is shot. Help me out, guys. I have a OEM service manual. Is there anything the manual doesn't cover?

I idled in gear for about 10 minutes last night, then noticed the temp was approaching 200, then the alarm went off. I shut it down for 5 minutes to cool off, then started it up and jumped on plane to keep the pressure up. Pressure is 2-5 psi at idle, 18-20 WOT.
That's about where it always registers, but it's not getting enough volume at idle apparently. Runs like a raped ape at WOT with temps around 150, but getting too hot at idle.
Sound like a candidate for a new impeller?

Easy job...Just getting everything lined up when going back together may be tricky your first time..There is a plastic alignment tube for the watertube that gets pushed up the watertube that usually wont come off when you take off the gearcase..be sure you pull it out and put it back on the pump housing before you try to put it back together..and change the whole pump out instead of just the impeller, it doesnt cost that much more..

don't forget to lube the pump impeller or you'll be doing it again

You may want to pick up a 12 pack to get a friend to help. It is sometimes easier to have someone to help if you need anything. Untill you get the knack of it! Just don't help on the 12 pack untill the job is done. :D Just a thought!

change the whole pump out instead of just the impeller thats a fact!! those housings warp and can cause just as much grief as a bad impeller

I read you loud and clear. I'll call Rick today and get a new pump, seals, impeller, and housing on the way!

My old 1750 Merc was doing the exact same thing. Around 5 psi at idle. Would creep up near 175. Get on plane and pressure would jump to 25 and temp would drop back down in the 150 range. Noticed each time out it was running warmer and warmer at idle. Bought the whole kit at the Merc dealer (61$ CDN). Kit has everything you need and then some. Changed the housing. As mentioned, I lubed the impeller blades before putting the housing on. Make sure you rotate the driveshaft the correct way as you seat the housing over the impeller. Was a pretty easy job and I should have done it sooner. Runs about 10 PSI at idle now and pegs my 30 PSI gauge running flat out. Runs as cool at idle now as it did flat out before.
