As some of you may have seen I finally got my old 63 Merc 1000 running with the help of Bill Gohr and now I want to put some guages in to help keep her alive. Temp and Water pressure. I saw in the service manual a factory water pressure but I am not sure if I use a Merc fitting or have to tap anything. Any advice appreciated!

Curious, as I might be helping him out putting them in if it's possible. Here's some pics of the old powerhead......

I don't think you need a pressure guage or a temp guage on that engine on that boat. Since it isn't jacked up and those motors don't have thermostats, there aren't many things that could cause cooling problems. It would take a bad impeller or something unusual like picking up something that blocked the water inlet holes like a plastic bag.

That thing sure looks clean and low hours.

you really want to do it. Take the top cowl off I think there is a brass plug in the water jacket at the top of the block. The Temp sender would just be a surface sender that contacts the block. Like Raceman said, not necessary, don't worry about it if you have put a new impeller in it. You sure dad wants you drilling holes in his dash????

You fix that carb problem.......

I was planning on making a small panel either hinged to drop down or on the side out of sight. The motor is running great...amazing what spending it's life in a boathouse did to preserve the overall condition, especially the wiring harness not baking in the sun. I want to put mainly a temp guage just in case. I would like to run the boat through the Lachine Canal system from Lake St. Louis to the old port and I am concerned about overheating. It can't hurt to have some guages to warn me. I have never let it run at slow speed (idle) for long periods of time.

"I have never let it run at slow speed (idle) for long periods of time."

It won't make any difference. The old motor won't run hot at idle. With extended idle I'd be more worried about the plugs loadin' up a little with the old type ignition than overheat.
