View Full Version : Exactly how fast can you get a boat to go?....

Does the speed depend on how much gas you give it?

That depends...

If your boat is in the garage all year like mine, it won't go at all.

If it's Helmut's boat, it will go faster than it should.

If it's JW's boat, it will be sold before it can be used.

If it's Dockboy's boat, it might end up on its side. : )

If it's Barney's boat... Um, we won't even go there. ; )

Seriously, it has to do with many things - in the simplest form: power, setback, hull design, weight, weight distribution, propeller, lower unit design, hull condition, driver skill, engine/hull setup, and weather/water conditions.

I didn't know if you just let it rip or not.... Our boat is still upside down in the garage! I think Scott is flipping it this weekend. It has been there for awhile and I basically have had no interest in it at all....up until now! I realized that Scott and the kids are excited as hell about this boat and he has put lots of time and work into it..sometimes to much time...lol He does make up for it though! I need to learn how to drive it so I can attach him to the back of it and watch him ski! (he best hold on for dear life cause I intend to take him for the ride of his life..lol) So....I have came here to learn and to meet all the guys he speaks so highly of regarding this project. I have met Sleekster and hope to meet the rest of you. My objective is to learn as much as I can if not more...he knows me when I get involved in something I get 100% invovled this boat could just end up with my name on it!!! lmao . Thanks for your information and hopefully we will be meeting all of you when our baja hits the water....If it's fast I will be asking anyone of you to race me! Whether I win or not doesn't matter but I will give it my best shot!

Dear KATHY,

Scott is very blessed (and I am sure he knows it) to have a supportive wife like you. You sound very similar to my own wife!

My wife has spent many years right in the middle hi-perf boat disscussions. Not so much now (3 kids!!) but she loves going fast!

...Like most will say...HOW FAST...really depends...but the question should also be....How Fast do you want to go?

That will also be an important question as not all hulls are capable of the SAFE SPEED you may want to go..

anyway...what boat do you folks have?

My blessings are extended to you for your interst.

anyone is interested...This is a girl that was caught by the local constabularies doing 106 in her Mom's car at 2:00 in the morning raceing a vett on a road with a posted 35! I won't be the least bit suprised when she's the one doing speed runs in the Baja!
PS the speeding incident also proves that if you are female and beautiful the laws get bent! Hummmm? There's the diferences in the sexes!

Ok.. you will hear this story and it is about my parents car! When I was 17 I had use of my parents plymouth arrow...basic cheese box. I was in a McDonald's parking lot and this guy I knew had a way fast camaro souped up to say the least! I dared him to race against me with my little plymouth arrow...lmao He said let's go and we took off going down a road where the speed limit was 35mph....busy road lots of traffic passed lots of cars at 75mph though 75 is not fast on this road it was! We were both stopped by a police officer who had radar...got two tickets for $250 each reckless driving and going 40 miles over the speed limit! I got off of both tickets thank god....Point is it was a major thrill to do something that at that time to me was daring...... I love going fast if I am the one driving I like being in control of the speed....How fast to I want to go in the baja....VERY ...as long as I have control of it I will go as fast as the baja will take me...if I feel I am losing control I will of course let up. Simply to try again! Hope this didn't bore you! :)

If you will monitor this board for a few day you will realize that noone is usually satisfied with the speed of their boats. Even when I think I've got the best out of it I can get someone will challenge me and here I go again trying props, raise the motor, and such

Good luck Kathy, sure have enjoyed your post, I am more of a spectator, but your post have sure brought some life to this section of the board.

Damn, I just knew there was a reason I built the new jet hydro to go 400mph.

Watch-it KEN, your boat just might be a CHICK MAGNET.......Best of luck with your new challenge...."The Speed Record that is"....

The speed is controlled by the gas pedal. Also by the trim of the engine and angle the boat is taking. Whether the boat has to be "driven" or not.
The idea is the water produces too much friction so you do what you can to get the boat in the air where there is less friction. This starts working on itself so that the faster the boat goes the less is in the water, and the faster it can go which allows less of it in the water. eventually some boats have only the prop in the water and the boat looks like a kite. This all done by "feel" just like how you drive your car home and never remember the lights that you stopped at, did it automaticly.

you mentioned before not seeing the off shore site so heres some direct links. If you hit the S&F at the bottom of the page it eventually takes you there.

Got to agree the ladies like to go fast. Many times over summer I had given guys and girls a ride in my Euro. Every time the guys were chicken except for a few. The ladies.... 90+, hey this is cool! Let's make another run.

Techno I really appreciate all your input I enjoyed the links! Thanks again. :)

The general rule of thumb on how fast you can get a boat to go all comes down to the basic " Theory of Speed " and that is " How Much Money Do You Wanna Spend".

kathy

We just may be coasting slow! ...... Seriously thank you for your input I got it. You get what you pay for. Thank you Woodco.

AH yes GRASSHOPPER I see you have found the meaning of life. It is true SPEED COST MONEY, HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO?

kathy

Yep I felt it! lol

This formula may not work as well with smaller boats but in some larger ones it's seems to always have been $1000.00 X Each Mile Per Hour you want to go.....sound about right???

Laserll
08-31-2001, 05:19 PM
That's a little steep for small boats. Not near as much boat in the water and not near as heavy. Alot easier to get them to run fast. Although fast is a relative term.

Most likely she will try to blow your motor! :D

OH! Forgot to mention, that was just to do modifications to the Engine(s) or Boat. The actual cost of the Boat and Rigging is another story......but yes outboards and small boats are by far the best speed for the money. Look at what I got + have $$$ left over....http://pages.zdnet.com/sharkeymarine/sharkeymarine/id2.html

Yes , I would agree with you as far as mods go. My buddy has a 28' Checkmate with twin 406 I/O and bang for the buck that is a huge looser. Sounds good though at 500 hp each.

08-31-2001, 05:44 PM
I have kept some boats long enough to see how fast they go! Just not all of them.............

I have to agree that the sound is AWESOME as you spend more $$$. Still don't mind a loud 2.5 EFI open exhaust at 8,000 RPM either though....LOL
