I got some photos back from the Hastings, MN Rivertown Days races. For your viewing pleasure:

Parking lot before anything got underway. Here is Jason Huber checking his safety gear....note the North Dakota boat registation. Hey mister, NICE boat!

Very ,very nice STV. Excellent wheelstand in front of the crowd during the drags. Love the Red, Orange, and Yellow graphics. Don't remember what prop he has on here. Go Hole$hot!!!

Thanks DBK. I had a great time. The prop I am running is a 26" pitch from RP. Here are some pics I have from the race. Hope we can do it again real soon.

Here is a spy photo of the super double secret 2.5 powerhead by GPI International. Wow, hey DIGITAL! The planing boards on the back were quite functional and put this boat on plane instantly and quickly downtrack. All hardware nicely fit and finish. Also a clear look at the 24" Hoss like wheel. 8800 rpm on every pass I think Jim said. Hey Mister, "Whats in that motor?"

DBK

Hey Barefoot Bob, good morning! Posting some crazyfast boat PICS before the boss gets here. Need your address if you want to view the video I made....it is short but fun to watch. More PICS.

Here is Dave "the Hammer" Hanly checking the water conditions....not good.....sloppy. 30 mph X-wind for a while and fairly stirred up. Coast Guard interdicted the boats going and coming from Lock & Dam #2 (out of view on your left) but it wasn;t great water. Note the grey motor, I like em. Hey MISTER, "I heard them Mariners was almost the same as a Mercury, only cheaper, that right?"

The racing was too far away for a decent shot with my setup for the day but they did come a little closer headed back for another run. Here is Chris "Hole$hot" Holzinger heading back up course for another go at it.

Balzy headed back up course. Balzy liked the chopped up water, worked in his favor. Hey MISTER, "What are those tubes going to your engine, NITROUS?"

Del Taco sponsered #5 Boat, kinda far away but I snapped it anyway. Jason and Dave "the Hammer" Hanly came nowhere near me. Hey MISTER, "What kind of boat is a DEL TACO?"

DBK

All done for the day, kicked everyones ass. Jim has his special double secret race shirt on for added speed, turns out he didn;t really need it. He was gonna actually weigh the rigged boat on the crane but I don't think they had the right sling, I am guessing 800-850 lbs total with minimal fuel, maybe. Note the crystal clear water of the Mississippi River in Hastings, we are at mile 814.5 if you are wondering....I think that is 814.5 miles from St Louis because it is way more than that to New Orleans. 5-8 mph current right in front fo the landing makes it tricky, ask Jason.

DBK
07-29-2003, 08:03 AM
Here is Balzy back on the trailer. "First loser" I think is how he put it. You get a little peak at his double secret prop here. If I recall it was some strange Aquaholic creation he had on. Kinda an ET/Cleaver mutt....must have worked OK because I recall thinking he would change it after practice but he didn;t. Hey MISTER, "Hydrostream, I heard of them, they are made around here aren't they?"

This like new Allison River Racer showed up late and he was kinda a mystery man it seemed like. At first I thought he would run drags but then upon closer inspection the Merc like cowling is actually hiding an OMC V-4 and he ran the Formula V heats. Interesting set up and a big boat compared to the rest but it ran pretty well until he got tangled up and dinged this mint hull...not terrible but he was pissed. It was on the far end of the track so I couldn;t comment on what actually happened but he said that he got cut off totally and ran over the back side of somebody. I know Jeff Baker's boat was bashed hard in the back during this race, cowling all askew, so that might have been him. Some words afterwards, exchanging ideas, no fight.

DBK
07-29-2003, 08:27 AM
Here is the start of the 120 heats. Tabararacing in the #95 boat and Landgraf in the #17 White Sherwin Williams boat, and Pfanku I think in #5, or is that Welch, not sure. There is another boat behind the tree I think. Anyway #17 and #95 were the only ones to get away at the start. Tabararacing ran very hard but the #17 was too difficult to catch, very smooth, very fast, no mistakes. Also has the best radio operator....... Hey Sherwin Williams, "Put your top, window thing down!"

Very nice 2.5 powered Voyager here. Have seen this boat before, met the guy right at the end, can't remember his name, sorry. Jump in here and tell more about this boat. Very, very clean.....if it is Pipkorn built it is very, very clean. I think it may be newer though, either Canadian or original mold Contzen. 2.5 power too......Hey MISTER, "That engine legal on this boat?"

DBK
07-29-2003, 08:48 AM
The rest of the pack is already gone, #442 still tweaking, changing plugs, changing jets....faster, faster ,faster, hurry up, drop on powerhead anyone?, bring the barge mounted hoist in here..... I was waiting for somebody to dump a whole toolbox in the water here but no such photo opp. Finally, we have POWER! Away we go.......For all the scrambling and little parts and jets and stuff they didn't drop anything in the river I don't think....NICE JOB!....all while floating a little bit down river in the 5-8 mph current at the landing. Formula V was the most entertaining of the heats to watch.....everybody ran hard, even the guy with the hole in his boat....keep the nose UP, you have a hole! Last photo, in fact I went back to my car to get my camera as I knew Jerry would want to savor the moment.

Man, am I going to owe you for this video...LOL...Looks like the miny weenies will be on me next time;)

I stuck a piston on my Pro Max:( Its up at Randy's right now. I am glad I didnt fix it myself. It would have just happened again. I think he found the main problem.

Do you guys still want some kinda weekend get together down here??? If so, we should plan something. When works good for everyone?

DBK
07-29-2003, 10:51 AM
Hey Barefoot:
Not the first time you stuck a piston I am sure. Visualize this.......
Bob, pushing his CR back to the pits, goggles around his neck, kicking dust:
"I don't know what happened, I didn't do ANYTHING wrong, just missed third and she revved to the moon then stopped......dam rice grinders"
Just pop the tank off, 6 head bolts, 4 jug bolts, your there, change out the piston, new small end bearing, new rings, diamond hone out the hole a little bit with the cordless drill, reverse the above sequence...........20 minutes and a Pepsi later and your ready for the second moto! Oh wait, thats a dirt bike, you got a few more parts to deal with on that ProMax. What is the root cause, broken water tube? Low water Pressure? Bad New Ulm Co-Op gas? Green water? Too much chine walk? Went boating with Gofast on Lake Pepin last Thursday, it was fine at first, then go so windy that we had to quit. We found some calm water on the lee side but even there you would get going and the wind would carry you sideways maybe 20 ft or so at a time.....very spooky stuff.
Video coming.

We are betting that the base gasket let loose under the power head. Causing the water to boil and the lower cylinders to get hot.

Still waiting for his call:confused:

OK, how is planning the 30th and 31st of August. Or does Sept. work better for you guys.

Hey Jason:
You up for a weeknight Mississippi or St Croix run soon? Water is just about perfect right now, not too low, not too high, so it is free of junk.....well never totally count on it but mostly free of junk. How about next Tuesday evening? I will check with my Gilligan's on going to Bob's. They are a little gun shy about boating after the 4th of July boat wreck so we have been taking this boat powered by Suzi-Q 115hp 4-holer. 48 mph @ 5400rpm w/20" Zuki prop.

Hey, thats not Barefoot Bob, that is Dave Reinhart, internationally famous barefoot and stunt skier. I think Barefoot Bob is better........

Sorry Bob, I have only covered a couple of hundred feet total without skis on my feet and I am not sure if I was barefooting or body surfing on my back. All I know for sure is the ski was quite a ways behind me when I was done. I do like to Slalom though. Here I am in my younger days leaning on a turn. Note the darker, less gray hair. Not too many turns like this in me anymore but I still enjoy a run when the water conditions are prime.

dyno,

that voyager in the photo is a '90 pipkorn hull that was worked over this past winter by g.p.i. .

all the teak wood was removed, the shiny' metal was powder coated white, new dash panels, glove box cover, gaffrig's, loads of bezels.

the new owner is suffy's pal grant b. , i think he spent more on the boat than the moonlight bay tab x10. remember? suffy?

"just put it on my tab" over.

JBF2002, you are the Dude of all things informative and alcoholic. I did note the white, powder coated hardware during my brief inspection...I liked it. Did not notice the absence of teakwood. 2.5 power is a nice upgrade from typical 200 stocker powered Voyagers. I would have bet by quick eye inspection, definately newer than '90 vintage. A testimonial to the excellent restoration job in the GPI House of Speed.

It I saw you pictured prominantly and often in the BTTW thread.....you party dude you. Several photos have you snuggled up to a very hot and sexy chick. You pay her for those shots? BTTW looks like a blast, I wanted to boat the Wolf, how was it?

By some quick math I guess the Voyager was $55,000 dollars then. Moonlight Bay tab X 10...............

Balzy:
I wish I had known how close you guys were to that side of the bridge support. There is a BIG, hard rock bar going out quite a ways and Del Taco's starboard can;t be more than 10 feet from it. It is actually sticking out of the water as couple of inches right now....it was not that day but the water has dropped another foot or so since then. Ah well, no damage. Been more than a couple of boats who try and scoot by that side of the bridge support, the red bouy placement there doesn;t real warn of the real hazard there very well.....it is an expensive experiment unless the water is very high. Boats going in and out of that marina know to go way out and around it. I've been out there practicing with nobody around....smooth water too.....big difference from that day. What the **** did you do to another lower unit? I missed another BTTW, looked like a blast, Wolf looked like fun, is it narrow like that and deep enough for very far? It would be like trail boating, Minnesota River is like that, except no houses, all flood plain.

The "Del Taco" boat is a GMT - Gilbreath Marine Tunnel. This same boat was built by Jerry Gilbreath out of California and was driven by Greg Foster in the mid 1980's in the Mod-VP class. "Del Taco" is a Mexican food chain on the west coast and was Greg Foster's sponsor. http://www.deltaco.com/

I don't think very many of these GMT's were built.

My friend iin Bullhead City had a GMT at the same time, but nobody could catch Foster. (except Stoker) He was FAST! This was a couple years before the pickle forked STVs, Mirages and Seebold Eagles came onto the Mod-VP scene.

Foster now drives the Sherwin Williams Formula One boat.

Jerry Gilbreath was working for Fountain a few years ago, and now he is back to racing with the APBA Offshore circuit. His father Jake founded GIL Marine.

IMO - Jim Holmans' "vintage" GMT (ex Foster/Taco) is as significant to 80's Mod/VP & boat racing of that period, as cars like Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins Camaro or the Sox & Martin Cuda are to vintage Pro Stock/NHRA car racing! Vintage Racing stuff is JUST PLAIN COOL!! :D

That is quite the getoff. You walk/hobble away from that? I can see why you have taken to airchairing.....and you have the stop action shots from it! Do you remember what went through your head? Never got into the MX competition but have definately logged many, many hours in the saddle. Mostly off road, but also did a stretch with road bikes. Havn;t been on any new crotch rocket technology (probably a good thing) but even a while back they were plenty fast. 115mph on the speedo on a Suzi GS-1000, side by side with a Honda CBR (6 holer) would be my overland top bike speed I guess, almost had that Honda too but he got about 20 ft on me gong into 4th and I never closed the gap again....he didn;t pull it open any more either though. That a CR-250 your on?, #26 it looks like, same number as my WR. Damage?, collar bones, neck, shoulder, front forks, F wheel. Did you double that section in practice or did it dawn on you as a good idea just as you got to it going a little faster than the previous lap?....last minute ideas can lead to trouble. When we were teenagers we would ride just outside of town in these sand pits...visitors would also come and join the regulars but wouldn;t know the local rules.....one way around the track for example. One guy one night came flying over the top of this rise and was surprised to find a 4ft wide x at least 2 ft deep washout. He failed to get the front wheel over it. He died at the scene. A last minute idea gone wrong. Tuesday, Sept. 2 St Croix / Mississippi run, make sure you can leave the shop for the day....start very early, my house in Hastings 7:30 AM, til the gas is gone. Dyno Don, Gofast, Jason, also maybe Pat Brown, Mike, Jason, Cp, Hole$hot, Dave I'll have to get a list out. Just a fun run. If you haven;t seen the Croix, Tuesday will be better than any weekend. A little drive for you but not terrible. Is the rotating assembly rotating freely again?

I did start the bike right up and finish the race. I guess I was so pumped up that if I had any broken bones I didnt know about them. I did have one hell of a bruse on my ass 3 days later though.

Randy is working on my motor now and is trying for Friday for me. I hope its done, I just hate being witout a boat and this will be 2 weeks Friday. I do feel for poor Gary, I guess if I were him I would pic it up and do it myself. The motor is something I could do myself also. But I wanted to know why it happened and he was unsure also:confused:

One more dirt bike photo and then back to boats. Worked a full day yesterday then beat feet to Lake Pepin for some evening boating last night. I bit choppy at first but once we got near Red Wing we were flying. Visibility in the setting sun and dim light wasn;t ideal so I did't really get any top end numbers in but about 95 mph with my 28ET with throttle left was fun. We did a bunch of that and then headed back as the sun set behind us. It was fun.

Vintage class anybody?
1975 KX-250
Note the dented rims and missing spokes in back.
Rear fender is mostly green tape.
Rear shocks by FOX, 3" travel...whopping 4" up front.
Powerband is from 8500-9000 rpm, zero torque down low.
Can you say LOUD, note the old style expansion chamber...with holes from being bent/straightened so many times.
Bent frame and shot rear wheel bearings.
Multiple dents in steel tank.
Not too many dirt bikes see what this bike went through...and she still ran great the day I sold it for $500.

No KX anymore. I had it chained under my deck at my old house and people would stop and want to buy it for Vintage class racing. Had ice tires for it too. It was a total wreck though. I finally said OK to some 19 yr old kid. I figured his body could take a little 3" travel suspension punishment. I am quite sure it is no longer in 1 piece. He would have either collapsed the rear rim or possible the swingarm. The whole back end was shot....from catching the BIG air a couple of thousand times. The motor was indestructable though....steel rings in a chrome bore....just nail it til ti won;t rev anymore, then shift, clutch optional. Kinda like a 2.5.....ha. Pursang's where very cool, couple guys from our gang had them. LOUD! He could ride wheelies as long as he wanted to....auesome show biker. Mix in a couple of Maiko's, Elsinor's, or Husquavarna's and we have a real old time motocross race.

I have a very interested party in your Baja. Need more PICS and basic info, year, length, trailer, PICS, price, nics, scraps, tears, can it be fished out of? Needs power right? Where did your other engine go? Send info now.

Rain this weekend I guess. May head to Dresbach (LaCrosse) for some river boating if it looks OK. RP working on your motor or Rumbling? Took the Suzi out last night for a spin....very , very reliable....44 mph @ 5300 rpm with the whole gang.

Jesus Bob.... You had a Bultaco?? What the hell were you thinking? Why didn't you just get an Ossa or a Maico?? I used to laugh at one guy I knew that rode a Maico... Every race, about 15 minutes into the moto, there he'd be on the side of the track... trying to start that big POS... Something or other had vibrated off (or loose) again.. The only fast and reliable European 'crossers from the '70's (at least from my experience and recollection) were Husqvarna's.. Actually, the funniest things were the Hodaka's with the shifter on the wrong side....

Maiko or was it Maico? Hodaka, guy in our gang had a Hodaka, Combat Wombat, it was a 125cc I think or possibly 100cc, shifter on the wrong side, go figure that. I had forgotten completely about the Ossa, nobody had one. Other odd bikes in our gang, Penton 175cc Jackpiner....pretty dam nice bike actually. Very, very light weight for its time. The Huskavaurna's big bores had the dam kicker on the wrong side, remember that? You ever come boating in St Paul or S on the Sippi? Better technology below.

Memory might be fading, but I think the Super Rats (100cc) were the ones with with shifter on the wrong side... I think by the time they started making the 125's (Combat Wombat & Super Combat), they had corrected it.. I just don't think the Pacific Basin Trading Company should have been making motorcycles..

I really get the urge to get a dirtbike now and again, but I just know I'd start crashing..... and I'm too old for that... Maybe if somebody had a deal on an old XR200 or XR250... Something slow enough to keep me out of trouble..

Trying to get a little gig going Tuesday, Sept. 2 but not too many takers so far. It can be a fun day......maybe 100 miles or so of boating fun. Scenery is varied, some usually good. Water has been wide open years gone by....
Think about it. How bout them 2 wheelrs.......end of August we are switching to sleds.

Had some bad luck of my own last night - Jen & I went out to Medicine Lake for a quick blast & tore-up my favorite beater prop - DAH26 ! Stupid phucking low water POS of a mud puddle phucking lake...  Think my next prop will be sent out for some of that top-secret chryo-treating so my prop will be able to destroy rock piles instead of vice-versa...;) Oh-ya, whats' up Jay! :D Hope you can come down to Donnie's gig on 9/2 - its' always fun tearin' around w/ya! Maybe see-ya' tomorrow on my way to Montana - might stop @ the shop w/props if your dad is around and in a good mood. OVER!
