Merc. 3.0 Cranks

Are there any differences between the early model Mercury 3.0 cranks, and the later model ones? I see a different part number, but wasn't sure if that involved a non-critical change.

In particular I am looking for a crank to fit a 1998 motor, so if anybody knows the suitable years, please let me know.

the Number one differance is the splines on the bottom of the crank. THere are two different ones..

there are 8 and 13 splined 3.0L cranks.. As for other differances I'm not sure.. but I have run in to the spline problem myself. I was selling a gearcase and the buyer needed a 13 spline and of course I had a 8 spline.

The early cranks had problems, the newer cranks have harder or thicker hardness.
