I have a 35 HP Johnson. I hit a steel rim in the river and killed my prop. I now have a new prop just like the old one and now the boat seems like it is coming out of gear before you can get it on plane. The prop hub is not spun since its new and I have bypassed the gear engaging mechanism and it is not popping out of gear. Is there some sort of shear pin or some other type of clutch that may have broke. It will push the boat at slow speeds but it feels like it is "spinning its wheels" before it can get on plane. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

If you slowly accelerate does the prop seem to bite allright until a certain point? I'm wondering if for some reason it's sucking air or exhaust and ventilating.

There is no shear pins any more if you have about a 80 or newer 35. More than likely you rounded the clutch dog ears and the forward gear. They are little compared to the steel rim and will not take much of that before they will start jumping out of gear.

A friend of mine bought a new prop with a bad hub as you describe. I'm not trying to suggest this is the problem but new doesn't always equate with good. It might be worth some time to find another prop to try.
Good luck,

On some of the small OMCs where the shift linkage goes under the powerhead there is a diecast bell crank and I have seen them bend if something was hit very hard and the unit will not shift properly.
