Has anyones lower unit ever siezed and that resulted a rod breaking ??
Well that what happened to my 245 carb yesterday.
This BLOWS...... July 17th no gear case, no motor and vaction in 2 weeks.
I know you guys will tell me i should have checked the gear case oil but i did. I did everything but give this motor a BJ before i used it.
i'm pissed and had to vent.
this sport is addictive and no matter how many motors/gearcases i blow up i can't walk away !!!
i now know how a heroin addict feels.
looking for a drop on 2.5 like new !!! any suggestions ???
ps

That stinks..3 weeks before my vacation I took my boat out for the first time of the season and my fuel pump started leaking fuel about 300ft from the ramp, when I let off the throttle the boat went into neutrel??The link that connects the cable to the shift rod broke..($5.00).So I rebuild the fuel pump with new "bearings" and new seals..The next time out about 300ft from the boat ramp the #2 piston took out the cylinded..(2nd bad day in a row)Needless to say by the end of my vacation, I got the motor back together and took it for a ride on the last day vacation .I put 1 hour on the motor when it shut off by itself. The dam new lower bearing in the fuel pump seized up!!!I guess someone forgot to pack the sealed bearing!!!When it seized I happened to be 5 miles from the trailer....But lucky me,I get Marine patrol to tow me back at .5 miles an hour..(another bad day!!)I now have my old bearing back in and have 2 more hours on the motor...WhaT A GREAT SUMMER!!:D :D hopefully tha rain will stop so I can put more time on the motor..Hope everything works out for you ...Good luck
MIKE

My yellow boat's only got about 10 minutes on it from new. First time out, ECU - $1200+. Second time out wiped out a really good Speedmaster blade on floating stuff. I'm scared to think about strike 3.

I've never heard of a gearcase seizing and breakin' a rod. Do you mean it locked up and broke it, or let it overrev????

Maybe that 'BJ' would have helped!

Thanks for the numbers for drop on power heads i appreciate it.
In response to raceman i have never seen this either. My guesss is that one of my rods was weak and the extra stress of the driveshaft seizing caused the rod to break.
I haven't yet torn down the motor completely but i did drop the gear case and it is tighter than a bulls ass at fly time. the propshaft moves but the drive shaft is frozen.
I also pulled the heads and i have a rod bearing lodged into my #6 piston.
This was a drag motor and i don't really know how much stress the rods had on them and if they were ever replaced or not.
When it locked up i was only revin 5800 rpm. I have seen the drag racers break the shaft and not the motor thats why this thing is so wierd to me ????
I will let you know i'm doin a complete tear down his weekend.
