Smokin' NEWS!

Welcome to the 18th annual Smokin’ in the Cove E.T. Drag Boat Race. Thanks to racers like you, the event has grown every year. We appreciate your efforts to attend this event, some of you travel hundreds of miles and some over thousands. I am looking forward to seeing and visiting with each of you and your families.

Now for the change in 2003- the 10 second class has been dropped- a second chance 8 or consolation 8 has been added. In the driver’s meeting 2002 I announced that the winning prize for the 6 second class would be $15,000.00. I have since slept on my announcement, also had conversations with other officials, racers, sponsors etc. We decided to spread the purse. – 24 boats in each class will qualify for Sunday’s race –

Top 16 6-6:99 7- 7:99 8-8:99 9- 9:99

8 second payout 1st place $750.00 2nd place $750.00
9 second payout 1st place 650.00 2nd place $350.00

With all this good news, comes some bad news. A major sponsor pulled but – so we are forced to raise the entry fee to $300.00. Not to mention the cost of insurance and etc.

I have a plan to raise payouts and lower entry fees. – We need each and every one of you to submit a history of your race team, boat likes and dislikes of Smokin’ in the Cove E.T. Drag race. Please include photos, info, and race history

Send them to:

This is like voting, your vote does count I realize a lot of you sent one year to Malvern- send another one also to Hot Springs.

I have some thought on purse payouts- without doubt 90% of you would run for less, Mark Robinson make the comment that he would run for $5.00. Speaking of Mark, he has retired from active racing, ole Rat Poison will be missed. “Brother” Dave will carry on- maybe Dave can get the win that eluded Mark.

Speaking of winners, Clay Mahaney, 2 time 6 second winner returns, after a years absence, Clay won when we were paying gas money. Despite the very tough competition, Clay will be A force to be reckoned with, as will all of you.-

How about Don Little, first jet boat to win the $10,000.00 6 sec. payout. Don was on his game, without a doubt he was the class of the field.- Oh yes, Don was awarded an additional $1,000.00 by Scott’s Marine and Welding- Don, pull the straps tighter you are now on the bill board.

The point of this purse money conversation is, if you happen to hit the set- up, run the numbers and go to the winners circle $ 10,000.00- $5,000.00 $4,000.00 - $3,000.00 will help pay the expenses, and fuel your fire to come back!

Now for the last bit of news “the pits” Chuck Earle, Heather Mattiza and the gang in the “hole” – across the out ramp road to “Deaton’s Corner” by the power poles, in front of the bill board # 1-6 seconds Qualifier going north per 24 feet # Qualifier #2 qualifier until the end of property line 14-15 spaces- Each pit space has 24 feet. If you have a vehicle and trailer that takes 12’ you can invite another racer from any class to occupy your additional 12’.

Across the road you are on your own. You might contact Ray Neudecker,or Barry Helms, other than that it is first come 1st served.

One more thought on the 6 second pits- if you travel with a group and you pit together, you can designate your space to any racer. Your qualifying order earned you the space on the front. Please do this in advance- most of you know where you will be pitting.

I have insurance issues to work out. All racers are required to have a current drivers license form current operating sanctions- (Read Rule Book for Details). There will be no exceptions, there will be no testing for license at race site. No one will race without a current license.

Fill out announcer cards, sign forms, and disclaimer at the end of the rule book and return with announcer card. Make checks payable to Smokin’ in the Cove Inc. for $300.00.Post date ck. Sept. 29/03. The reason to post date the check is for any reason you are unable to attend, or don’t like the way you are being treated, we can return your ck.

We have approx. 140 pit spaces, we have a purse of $41,000.00 plus insurance etc. I need to know if you are coming and the color of your green.

The themes for the 18th annual Smokin’ in the Cove E.T. Race is spectators and Racers alike will get to see something that cannot be stopped. – Run into something that cannot be moved. Sounds like Earl “low gear” Smith and (6 sec) Howard Coley.

See you in Sept.
