Would appreciate any info on the materials merc uses or after market products which may be used to restore pro max and hipo blocks back to the orginal finish after oven baking blocks. Thanks in advance.

the blocks are basically irridited... it is basically just a dip that gives it a yellow finish and gives it some extra corrosion resistance...

if you do some research on irriditing or metal treatments in your area, you might find someplace local that does it...

it is a common treatment that is done to aluminum, if you talk to any place that casts aluminum, they should be able to help you.

Those blocks are plated with Nikasil or as USChrome calls it NiCom. You can find out info on it at http://www.uschrome.com or http://www.usnicom.com There are also other companies out there that do Nikasil plating like Langcourt ang Mellinum but ONLY USChrome can do Merc V-6's and they so all of the New Blocks from the Factory for Merc Racing.

he was referring to the exterior finish of the block..... which does not mean you are not correct about the bores, but it might be costly to have the whole block Nikasiled, :-)

the chemical you are referring to is called alodine. it can be bought from any aircraft supply company. it is a corrosion inhibitor. there are a few procedures you have to go thru to use it. its not just dip and go. email me for more info. oh , and of course the state of california says it can cause lung cancer so where a re breather.
