Bel - Accelerometer. Looks like a neat toy.

I've got one that's a good bit older and it has to remain fairly level, or at least stay on the same plane as it started registering on, for the pendilum to get an accurate reading. It works well in cars but won't work a lick in a boat. Since it looks like those are hand held, I assume the technology is totally different and don't see why it wouldn't work.

OOOOPS, I read the fine print and it says the acceleration function will only work on motorcycles "providing they don't lift the front wheel on acceleration", so I assume the technology is similar to my older unit. It also says the unit attaches to the windshield with suction cups, which further sounds like mine, and "the G Force function won't work on motorcycles because of the way they lean in turns".

I emailed the makers of the G-Tech Pro. Its a similar component. They said it wouldn't work on the water. I didn't persue it any more after that.

Would it be possible to mount one of those on some type of gimbal or gyro to keep it level during acceleration?

Any of the cheap models of these types of devices use only a single axis accelerometer. Any change in pitch it reads as acceleration or decelration.

Theoretically you could mount it on a gimbal, but I don't think the effort is worth it for a device that isn't all that accurate even when used properly.

Yea, and what's the point of having a motorcycle if it won't do that???

Actually, I did try one on my bike -- it's probably pretty close..
