I have a 2.4 Bridgeport that i keep on the shelf to use as a spare motor. the time has come to use it and it has developed a high rpm skip. The motor has turned 9400rpm previously. only changes i made were converting from a 5 pedle setup to a 7 pedle, and freshned the rings, berings, ect. This is a carb motor.

the PROBLEM:

The motor runs good untill about 6500 rpm where it picks up an intermedient skip. the skip can be herd as well as felt. sometimes it turns on up to 75-7800, and sometimes it wont turn over 7000. The burn patterns on the pistons all look good, except #6, which appears to be a good bit richer than the other cyl. One other strange occurance is the motor is requiring 97 jets, and before i was running 94 jets. i have run it 4/5 times. i have put 3 stators on, i think 1 was bad. all three stators came off running motors, but you know how reliable that is. changed packs with no response, swaped coils on the #6 cyl with no change, and replaced the trigger with no change.

I have currently ordered a new stator from mercury, i need one anyhow for one of my 2.5lit motors so it wont be a waste, and my suspicions tell me that i have a stator problem. The #6 senario has hot me a little confused.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, keep in mind this is a 2.4 Liter.

thanks

It sounds electrical. Check the coils and coil wiring very carefully.

I had a wire go bad on me on my truck and it did the same. It would only miss under a load. Maybe a bad plug? Have you switched them with another cylinder?

thanks for the input.

the reeds are fine, Boyeson 2stage for over 10,000rpm.

the skip comes and goes, this would eliminate i think, but i did check them they are fine.

compression is good also

i have swaped coils, and changed coils on the motor to see if i could move the skip to another cyl. it stayed on #6

i am not pos that #6 is the skip; it is just slightly richer than the others, and that is suspicous to me.

i have checked the wiring, but i will try replacing it today.

still waiting on the stator.

anyhow thanks for the input and suggestions

How bout fuel pressure ? Sometimes the simple things get us the worst. Low fuel pressure can cause intermittent skipping and a loss of rpm too, possible restriction too? Filter? NEC

sounds like a good possiablity, thanks

i checked the dead head psi and it was fine, i happen to have another holly in the box; i will swap and try.

and i didnt get a chance to try anything new.

thinking back, i had a johnson doing the exact same thing around 5000rpm, it sounded like ign skip, felt like ign skip, i even thought it was ign skip, and you know what the problem was...

FUEL PUMP was bad!!!

thanks for the tip i will keep yall informed on what i find.
