hmm, my mercury doesn't do that, and niether do any of the omc's that i have seen... Seriously, if it is carbed you'll just have to live with the hard, first start. the only suggestion i have is to choke the crap out of it.

What yammy are you running???Most starting problems I run into is that they are under choked on the carb models, or your not giving them enough throttle and the EFIs will start instantly unless you give them throttle when cranking...

HEY VECTORPAT...It's a 1986 200hp CARB mota...You may be right about choke & throttle...I am ALWAYS a little skeered to choke too much...I DON'T have any problem with the GO-PEDAL...lol...I will bite the bullet & hold the choke switch more & see what happens...If the plugs get "swamped" I will let you have it on Monday!!!...lol...THANX.........Nice lookin boat btw!!!...............

Give it enough throttle to give it a fairly high idle and hold the choke while cranking..When it fires you might hold the choke for a second or 2..Most of the time you may have to keep popping the choke until it warms up... If you think you have flooded it just give it full throttle while cranking it(just be ready if it does light up)this lets it get alot of air in the cylinders to clear out excess fuel..

Get a priming pump off a 225 Excel, and it will start like an EFI engine.

Tell us more, Please!!!! Not really sure what your refering to. Maybe a pic would help. My 2.6 is the same way, Hard to start the 1st start up of the day. We've talked about this problem before.

The 225 Excel that was made in the late eighties had a priming pump instead of the choke system. I got one used. Since I had a Carter fuel pump, I essentially used the priming pump as a valve; there was pressure anyway from the Carter pump. I put t-fittings on the hoses that enter the carb-spacer plate right above/behind the carbs and connected it there so that fuel would trickle in behind the carbs. This also allows the choke butterflies to be removed, improving the airflow to the engine.
I'll try to remember to take a picture the next time I am at the boat.
A priming pump from an OMC or an automotive cold start injector would probably work as well.

After I made that post last night and layed down in bed I rembered an old 88 model ****zuki I once had that had the same type set up with the mikuki??? carbs. The old motor was a piece of crap but alway started on the 1st or 2nd bump every time useing a primer/pump like a choke that gave the cylinders small burst of fuel when you pushed the key in. I think were on the same page with this. I'd still like to see exactly how your yammi is set up.

the 3 cylinder 50 yamaha has something similar to this as well.

Will go to the shop later today. If I am not too caught up with Mercury woes, I will take a picture of the set-up.

This is what the pump looks like. It mounts to a fuel pump bracket.

Here is a picture of how it is teed into the fuel system. The whole thing is controlled by a choke button on the dash that used to control the choke solenoid.
