yeah...i'll be there.........bad day testing though.....popped my brand new gear case.......pissed....all new gears,bearings,seals...even payed someone to set it up "right".....oh well...gotta take it apart and see how bad it is...could have been worse i guess....went 111 just before it started vibrating like crazy.....thought i slung a blade off my brand new $850 hoss 34p....but no--it was the gearcase that i just dumped $950 into......f*&k,sh&t,cr&p.....ok i'm better.....oh yeah ....almost forgot--waited all week for my new autometer water pressure gage to arrive so i could start raising the jack plate.....it never went off 0 psi so i still haven't got to play with all the new toys on this thing yet............haven't even looked at it yet....i'll be ready for the rumble i hope..........greg

I may just keep going to Michigan if you let me drive! I was hoping to have some extra jingle this summer, but it has been pretty dismal. Late start to the season and some crappy weather is keeping me down. Maybe I can get myself a nice Christmas present tho.:) I was getting 115 with a svs'd 260, can't wait to here what you get to finally. Great job!

i wouldn't mind playing with some fuel injection myself...the ole carbuerated revinrude just doesn't like the heat and the humidity.....i think it will see mid teens with this motor if i can get a gearcase to hold together.........they don't like these giant props that us omc guys have to run......you merc guys can just turn a katrillion rpms and a 28p.....i'm trying to keep this thing around 8000 and it is happy there......next project is the flats boat deck....went fishing today for the first time in about 6 months and absolutely slayed em....big redfish ..4 guys..probably caught 40-50 fish....i'm wooped....i'll fool with the gearcase tommorow.........see ya ...greg

I see you have tear shaped the back and do you still have the steps then?

Sitting it looks like one of those jetboats with the high sides on her, looks faster than one of those hottubs though!

What kind of speed can you get her up too? Also the nose look's differrent!

RRRevinrude, I'm curious, did you give those new gears time to break-in?

I put a new set of Ford 9" gears in my big block Galaxy one time (after going through several used sets) and made the mistake of beating on the car before they had a chance to break-in.

Brand new Richmond gears were junk after just a couple miles. Made me sick. It was a lot of work and cash to get them setup just right.

Maybe it's a hypoid gear thing, I don't know if lower unit gears need a break-in or not

thats a hell of an idea B L .....i never really thought about it.....i made a few easy passes with the boat cause its a lot lighter than my other hst but ....no i really didn't give the gears much time to get acquainted at all.....the powerhead has lots of time on it so i didn't really take it easy on the gearcase....hmmmm....any gearcase guru s out there.....talk to me ...i'm runnin out of money quick and don't want to do this again.....any body got hardened gears for a johnson ???help!!!!!! BTW --BL---i may want to hook up with ya'll on the rumble trip....don't know when i'm leaving yet but i'll keep in touch...................wanted v-6 omc gearcase with hardened gears,16" driveshaft and shift shaft, hydromotive nosecone, lifetime gaurantee in the 2-3 hundred dollar range...........any takers????????? LOL ...... p.s. maybe it was the mercury hi po gear lube i put in there..... greg

I dont think breaking in your gear case is a problem. When I put 4.10 gears in my ford lightning truck the guy told me to keep under 50 mph for the first 200 miles and no more than 10 miles at a time due to temperature in the case could rise too high before the gear set seats thouroghly under acceleration. The water I think keeps the case cool.I 'm no mechanic but have never hear of case failure do to insuf, breakin.

Well hypoid gears are an all together different animal I know that much. But I learned my lesson and even called the tech guys at Richmod to confirm it. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to put a few miles on the gears first before wringing it out.

I'm leaving early thurs morn (5-6am) for the Merc slay-fest (Rumble) :D

I'm driving straight through, I don't have the family with me so I won't need 3-4 stopovers

Let me know what you got planned I adjust a bit.

My spare gearcase is blown also. I had a chunk of exhaust filler block break off (it's a crossflow thing  ) and got lodged between the prop and bearing carrier. The pinion gear turned to dust instantly. Not so bad, the Eckerd College babe that towed us in was soooo sweeeet it was worth it! ;)

Rrrevinrude I LOVE IT!!! Keep the cool pictures coming when you have them. That thing looks great! Brings back fond memories, I had one with the same motor. Unfortunately mine didn't stay together after a rogue wave.

I got all this beautifull water up here and cant even hardly use it.Thats wy I jump all over the chance to go to every gathering I can.Anyway your ride looks great! When I had my v-king I allways liked those h.s.t's.never saw many let alone one that actualy went a 100 m.p.h !.Hats of to a job well done.

No, I was lucky. I only bumped my elbow on the gunwale. I caught a roller tripped the second one and stuffed right corner of the bow into the third one, (not a complete stuff cause I was crooked in the air). The one sided stuff must have caused a twisting motion on the hull.

Hot Shot Merc
07-12-2003, 10:14 AM
Ya, thats what it looks like .looks like it pop'd as if it were under preasure from the twist.I''ve stuffed a few v bottums but only thing hurt was my pride.Thats wy I like the rivers and lakes.Sarasota bay gets nasty on the weekends from all the traffic.

I love my Skater on the bay!!!!!

My HST was great in the rough choppy waters too, just not swells longer than the boat, (like the one that led to it's demise):(

I don't know if it's important to break outboard gears in or not, haven't ever thought much about it, but guess it'd be a pretty good idea. In the case of the failures in cars, I don't think it would have anything to do with temperature, but more likely establishing a wear pattern.

Gear5s need at least 1/2 hour break in at 3k if you want them to live with big power above them, I generally run them an hour with a small prop. Where they deburred before assembly? also important with more than stock power.

thanks al --the next set will be....at 100- that sucks that was a pretty boat....gonna use my 32 cleaver next time...not much difference top end but doesn' seem to grip as hard as the hoss....just need some more seat time before the rumble....hey racer--you goin to the rumble????

i met you at the ramp in sarasota several months ago....it was your first day in the water....i was up there delivering a hurricane deck boat and we talked briefly....we still have a few places where we can run these things but they took away the peace river....i have talked to several people who are getting tickets in the new manatee zones and they are being thrown out of court......i haven't had the balls to go up river and intentionally get a ticket but we will see ......problem with getting stopped with this type of boat is there are so many different things they can write you for....unsafe opperation etc. etc.---but from what i hear, the judges are not enforcing these new laws.....so if ya'll get a ticket--don't just mail it in--go to court.............greg
