why is it when you see 2 or 3 guys in a cigarette boat, fountain, baha, checkmate, donzi zx. you get the picture and they see you in your twin outboard tunnel roaming across the lake minding your business with your family they want to race? now i got to drop the family at the beach go out and put the woop on them stop and talk and all i hear is we thought you were slow and heavy, did they forget about air the goes under a cat to make it fast? their boat aint heavy? i dont go lookin because i may get beat there are fast boats out there, northern wis.

Cause they know nothing about OBs. They go to the boat hangout or dealer or boat mag, and see I/Os and vees. That is the only thing for sale to most unless you go looking for something else. All offshore is I/O pretty much too.

Can't sell good music if it aint on the radio and mtv... oops, the music industry is dead just like OBs...hmmm, what happened here? Inflated prices, poor product, no marketing...DOH! That, and the fact that most of them would be too drunk to drive 100mph in a boat.:)

Eli - your fellow Cheese-Head - Mike Balz, has his hot-boat hootenanny there in (central) Wisc. in 2 weeks! You should check it out - might even be some I/O rat-killin' goin-on... :D Details are out here if you didnt' have already. ;)

I was looking at hull/pad designs one day. So I was all over the net on hull manufaturers sites looking at stuff like bottom pics/strake design/steps, etc. Any major manufacturer like Sea Ray or Bayliner for example, hardly makes an OB starting at 17' and up; if they do they do not push it. I swear if Merc made a smaller/lighter I/O than the iron duke, you would not find a 16' OB hull anymore either.

Does anyone know the price diff from say an 18' OB to the same I/O drive/hull?

One thing I've noticed around here is that anybody with a loud sterndrive will jump anything that goes by. There was an old Mariah around here several years ago that'd probably run high 50's if that, and he'd U turn and jump anything that he even had a hint was high perf. I never heard of him outrunnin' anything with it except maybe a few Ski Nautiques.

I see guys all the time that try to run my Camaro just to see how fast it is. Sometimes I fall for it and just smoke them bad and then think why did I do that? I've seen it on the water too. I think they do it knowing that they aren't going to win but just want to see how fast your boat is. :)

"The truth is, sterndrives are faster than outboards."

Say what?????? I think that's a misleading statement. I might agree that it's possible to get higher HP in a sterndrive, but stick equal power from outboards or sterndrives on identical boats and see what happens. I have a 22' sterndrive with a 540/575 Mercruiser/Blackhawk, so I don't think I'm predjudiced.

It sure is FUN to stomp on these so-called "fast offshore boats" with a single 200 OB on my RALLY-SPORT!!!...I pick those boats off all day long & REALLY surprise em when it actually gets a little rough (like OFFSHORE???)...You'd be surprised at the ACTUAL/REAL top speed of some of these pink/purple/teal color co-ordinated drink holder "offshore boats"..."Ya,...it goes 86 mph with 4 people in it in ANY kind of water...(he said at the bar...lol)...I usually leave the last 800-1000 rpm in reserve to really finish(embarass) them off!!!...GOOD THREAD...btw...

Al Copeland had a cat with 6 (I mean six) 2.4 efi's..but had mount pads for 8....4 pads down each side..long drive shafts..and speedmaster outdrives...set a record in the first race in the Bahamas of 107 for the run..(ocean race) The boat was a thing of beauty..engineered by Bill Sirios and I think Jerry Gilbreath..made lots of beautiful NOISE..I heard it was the fastest cat ever run at the lake at the time...maybe some of the lake guys can fill us in a little...
