I'm in the market for a new Bass boat . The new boat is big
and heavy and I'm looking for the best motor for all the speed I can get .(at least all I can get out of this boat , a 206 Champion)

I have looked at a 250 Vmax not a HPDI and was thinking about a 250 XB Merc if I could find one.

What do yall think???

P.S. Gas millage is not important i figure when your willing to pay
30+ for a bass boat why cry over a few gallons of gas.

Did anyone see this yet?

Yamaha VZ 300 - 3.3 Liter V6

Only pushes this 1950 LB (dry) 22'3" Ranger Bass Boat to 72 MPH at @ 5600 RPM

features - heat treated connecting rods, forged pistons with plated first rings and special oil keeping second rigns, newly designed hardened gears, special shaped skeg, low water pickups, and water cooling to the crankcase.

Boating Life Magazine, July/Aug. 2003

The article doesn't give the weight of the motor, I'm curious what the weight is, and how the gearcase compares to a Sportmaster.....

Its on the cover of this months B&WBs pushing a Champion to 73+ also. Damn, left the mag at the hospital and could give you some specs.

but I think you could do good with a yami.
I here they are very dependable too.

a few months ago bass and walleye boats did a shootout on the 250 xb vs the v-max 250.. both good motas but i think they gave the edge overall to the yammie.. buuuutt.the merc was like one mile per hour faster.. i will try to dig up the issue tomorrow and give some more specifics..at100plus has a point . the 300hpdi yamaha is supposed to be bulletproof and pretty darn fast..

I was surprised that the 22 Ranger would only do 72 with it though. I know these tests tend to be a bit conservative but.....

I wonder what the rev. limit is on this motor too.

ghost28

limit is very conservative at like 6100 i think. i have been told you can turn a giant prop and just jet it pull .. wish it turned higher though.. we shall see soon ..once they are out there..i have been trying to get my rep to talk yamaha into giving me a pair to try out on an offshore rig, you know ..for testing purposes..:D :D

3.3 liters! Potential for more than 300 hps with a few tricks....

What's it weigh?????

I'm ready for a Pro Max 400

that the Yamaha VZ300 weighs 539lbs. The 300hp is made at 5500 rpm. Its "estimated" price is $19,800.

It pushed a Champion 223 Elite to 73.3mph at 5900rpm. They said that they used a 27 pitch Yamaha prop and that it was the tallest pitch that Yamaha currently makes. So it may have been faster with a taller prop.

I am a boat builder and use both merc and yamaha,I have rigged some 29' center consoles 1-twin 250 mercs 2-twin 225 opti's 3-250 efi yamahas 4-250XS merc's 5 and I have a pair of the new 300 HPDI yamahas on the way, allso have rigged 300 promax's but not 300 X's The 250 XS were the fastest, the 250 yamaha's run the same as the 225 mercs, but I think it has to do with the X -dim.the mercs have a water pick up on the front of the bullet and we block off the top 4 holes allowing the merc to be run with a higher X-dim.Im looking forward to getting the new 300 yamaha's,I expect them to run like the 250 XS mercs, and they cost about the same $14,200.00 rh and $14,400.00 lh,you can get the new yamaha's with a CLE style gear case, this will make a big different, both the merc's and yami's are good motors,my boats are all hand built with all composites, and lite to industry standards, the yamaha's seem to have a small advanage on heaver boats! my 2 cents worth John LIGHTNING POWER BOATS

It's pretty bad to pay for 300 and get 280.You know when you go through the drive through and get home to find out your french fries are not there.Missing what you paid for?I know the 10 percent rule + or - 10 */..I have a 250 v-max and its only 3mph slower than a 300...No way!Too much cash for 3 lousy mph

On a big, heavy fishing boat, it is really hard to beat the torque of the 3.1 liter Yamaha block. I have seen dyno curves for the 225 Yamaha VMax and the 225 3 liter Mercury, and the Yamaha is way stronger.

Add the Japanese quality to that, and you are pretty much set.

And we should all speak Jap to our motors, Indian to our telephone operators, and Chinese to the guy at Walmart.

Incase some didn't know....Alot of Mercs that are sold are Yammies w/Merc cowling/stickers.Do you talk Jap style to your Merc? 225 4 stroke Mercs are Yammies just to name one.

Dave S

I am into old classics so the only thing I have made in jap land is nothing. But Merc will have it's hands full with Yammi Suckii Thashubuy and Honda nipping at their heels. When the USA no longer makes anything you may not have a job, unless you sell Hondas. The jap stuff is better, because of our buying style feeds their R+D..... I hope things get better for this country. I may be wrong about my thougths but watch as the Japs take over on the water as they did on the roads.

Speed costs $$ and on the big end each mph is worth about 13 hp. 3 mph would take about 42 hp - so the difference you are referring to is about right (close). To put 3 mph difference in perspective get one of your buddies to line up next to you and you put your boat in gear and idle away from him - that's what the 3 mph difference would look like at whatever top speed you run. Trust me, you would describe this difference as HUGE. You would literally just walk away from the other guy. I know 3 mph doesn't sound like much but it is. My boat is a 112 mph tunnel with two merc 300x motors. It's about two miles per hour faster than a friends similar boat with two merc 2.5 280hp motors. But when we run it's not even close, after a minute or so I'm 15-20 boat lengths in front of him. Just depends on what you want. Remember, 2nd place is 1st loser.

Dave S it might be a jap motor but the yammies around here make unbeatable durability wise motors. The fishermen here run the poop out of yammies and they hold up well to the salt. Myself I like the new fight. Rick

The 300 is 50lbs heavier too. There goes your 3 mph.300X is what you need for the speed 314 hp at the propshaft.

This is coming from a Yamadude.

I hope things get better for this country. I may be wrong about my thougths but watch as the Japs take over on the water as they did on the roads.

Since we are talking about the top of the line and most expensive outboards..lets compare to the top of the line and most expensive cars...Japs don't even come close....think Enzo, or Twin Turbo Porsche, or even Viper or Vette...
or visit your local Yammi dealer and see how many of these wonderful bulletproof outboards are in for warranty work because they aren't any better than the best the USA builds....
true the Japs build good cars like Toyota and Lexus..but I'll take a Lincoln or Caddy any day..and I have a Lincoln and a Dodge hemi..

Long live the USA...

It all depends on what ya want. I have an older yammie, but absolutely love the low-end torque that the older 90degree Yamaha's provide. I'm not here to bash anybody's motor, just my personal prefernce to run Yamaha. I also have a 15hp Mariner and two Sea-Doo (Bombardier) jet skiis....Just on my bass boats give me a yammie any day of the week. Yes, if I had a go-fast I'd probably run a promax. But I don't so I won't. I have seen Yamaha's run to hell and back without even caughing. The only real drawback to Yamaha is the design of the water-intake grate. If you have to run through hydrilla (like on West Lake Toho) then they tend to clog up. But if ya don't run through the weeds, then it's just like any other motor. Now it is difficult though to find a station that sells rice fuel....:D

What do you want?

If you have to squeeze out every last mph and rpm no matter what buy a Mercury (XB or XS). If you would be happy with excellent performance and durability buy a Yamaha VMAX.

IMO on the Champion your lookin at the 3.1 or 3.3 Yamaha would be the best choice.

In that test of the 300 Vmax on the 22ft Champion they ran "upper" 70's (78-79 mph?) with a light load and the 27" wheel. The 300x ran 80.5 on the same boat.

On the 250 (EFI) test the top speed difference of the 2-way average was one tenth of a mph if I remember correctly.

my .0002 cents :D
