My brother has a 96 2.5 EFI hi-perf. If was just rebuilt, and is a "cherry". We put it together, and there is a "Sleeve" on the top of the Crank, which acts as a Bushing between the New Style Bearing, and the Crank's Shaft end. This was a jerry-rigging by Merc, when they changed over to the Big Bearing, and had some of the older style cranks left (that's what they explained to us). However, you cannot use the old Roller Bearing on this crank, according to respected motor builders. Called Merc Hi-Perf Tech, and they were absolutly NO HELP. they said to get a new crank, because that one was obsolete. It is an excellent crank, except for this damned bushing (it's only .0035 thick, roughly). Merc did this, and now offers no part to replace, if the old one is damaged (like this one is).

The best suggestion so far has been to "press-on" a bushing to the Crank end, then machine it to spec, and press the bearing on that.

Has anyone "fixed" one of these before? How did it work out? Does anyone have an extra "Bushing" for this they could part with?

Thanks

Greg

Jay, I thought I had the picture on these, but, I had no idea the sleeve is so thin. I thought they were about 0.015 on a side(hardly any better). I sure like your repair better for this Large Bearing configuration. Regards, Cy

We have fixed several of these in the past that have had no problem after repair . The way Mercury sends these cranks out with thse make shift sleeves in the BIG $$$$ motors is ridiculous......

Just to clarify, I had my decimal point in the wrong spot, should be .035 thickness, not .0035.

If the sleeve came loose and the crank surface is OK you just use the upper main bearing assy that Merc was nice enough to provide.......1159-832012T2. Bolt it together.

Bill, Is that number a bearing and casting assy?--sounds like it. Cy
