Where can one buy plastic or light weight gas tanks from? I have a 14 or 15 gallon tank in my HST (1989) and it's likely heavy. I want to lighten the back end up a little. I'll probaly look at a 20 gallon if it will fit. Help.

Tx,

Boz

Boz, my brother skidoo29 just put in an 18 gal tank in his HST, fit perfect and really light. Made by Tempo, believe almost any marina can order them for you from their suppliers. Think it cost around $175 Canadian

From a catalog:
All our below deck fuel tanks are made of marine grade cross-linked polyethylene. These seamless, one-piece construction fuel tanks are impervious to salt and weathering, and will never rust or corrode. Each tank comes with a electrical sending unit already installed, 90-degree withdrawal assembly, a 5/8 vent and a 1 3/4 '' fill neck.

Manufacturer p/n: TP18T
Dimensions: 16"Wx26"Lx13 1/2"H

Boz,

I was able to fit a 27 gallon in my HST with just enough room for the battery in front of it (although the battery is sideways). That is a lot of gas when you need it but I rarely fill it. As a matter of fact the top caved in a litte bit cause their wasn't much room between the top of the tank and the top of the boat. The fill hose won the battle and the plastic tank sank in about an inch to make way. :D

Steve Anderson was always threatening to make a custom aluminum tank for his and Balzy's but I don't know if he did anything like that yet.

27 gal! Thats a big tank. We didn't go that big on my brother's HST because we wanted to be able to get to the bilge pump in the back in case it breaks without taking out the gas tank and everything else.
Saw a Sleekcraft on the weekend that had dual tanks. 10 or 12 gal each, one in each sponson near the back. Not a bad idea except for the changing in balance side to side when the tanks empty.Lots of room in back though without a gas tank back there.

Jegs and Summit have big selection of them. Race cars all use them, just like the race boats.

Also the ones in overton's or other boating businesses are set up with a vent hol, a fuel fill hole, a pick up hole, and a sending unit.
be careful if you order from a car business, some of theirs are set up with no fuel fill, so you cant run a hose to your gas cap. Also, they are sometimes set up with no pick up, but a AN type fitting at the bottom of the tank. And usually no sending unit for a gas gauge. Just be careful when selecting not to get a fuel cell with none of the hookups you want, or you'll be setback a couple weeks, and they sometimes charge a restocking fee if you return it. Not to mention you'll eat the shipping.
