Listing my late 1987 Velocity 22 for sale. Will attempt to describe as accurately as possible.
The Good Stuff:
Previously campaigned in APBA/CPBA in the 1990’s 2 pics from its racing days featured in the pictures. Boat has been restored at least 2x in its life. Light layup (can see sunlight through the resin & gel). Possibly Kevlar based on color and how the glass sands in hidden areas (fuzzes up). Very light on the water & trailer. Previously campaigned as “Boatel California” & “DX/DT”. Likely built in the final days of Velocity and early days of Regal during which Steve Stepp was building the boats there, and the dash layout is the earlier, more desirable lighter 22 without the walk through door to under dash. The boat is as close to Mario Kart as you can get. Should be illegal- Crazy fun, very fast & loud, and turns on a dime.
• Boat was originally Brown & Black & White. At some juncture in its life the top deck was repainted what appears to be base/clear gloss white above the rub rail along with the dashboard. Windshield still in excellent shape along with the original teak trim. Hull in excellent shape, original brown stripes were painted over Red. Original Gauges with bronze rings, Dino Steering wheel. Interior was redone at some juncture since the 80s and is now black/red. Interior in good shape and about a 7 out of 10. Snap cover is in good shape and recently just replaced a few buttons and replaced the pole. Stainless Rub Rail in excellent shape.
• When I acquired the boat it was in decent cosmetic shape but mechanically derelict/not running. Old Race engine was damaged, and I still have some pieces from it.
• Undertook that restoration and recently was rerigged with an EFI 2000 Mercury Gen 6 BBC 7400 Vortec L29 454 7.4 MPI Cool Fuel engine along with Stainless Marine Exhaust. Valve covers powdercoated bright red, diamond plate black steps in bilge powdercoated wrinkle black. New Battery/Battery Box/Battery Switch. New Blower. New Bilge Pump. HP500 Oil Cooler. All New Oil lines, Hardin Oil Distribution Block & Stainless Thermostat housing. GM Performance Parts 30 psi oil bypass. Engine painted with Eastwood Engine Black. Engine is fed through a through hull fitting with Merc Crank Driven Raw Water Pump. New Sierra Ignition Switch. Boat is extremely fast with good dock manners being EFI. Good compression/leak down numbers done in March 2025.
• Alpha SS Drive. Rare factory -2.5” shorty drive with CLE bullet lower. Recently repainted and new decals. 1.5 gears. New Gear lube/resealed last week. New Water pump impeller with a new stainless Teague through hull fitting/drive shower. Drive cools the drive, engine & exhaust cooling water fed separate. 23p Mirage Prop. Boat needs more prop testing as it’s a new rig/build and would need that figured out. Hydromotive 24-25 probably about right or a 25p Mirage +. Passenger side trim controls from racing are still present and can be driven solo or with 2 person team. Up & Down trim for drive in front of passenger as well as on throttle for driver.
• Trim Tabs are original to the boats racing heritage and were custom fabricated in the 90’s. They are a slightly longer version of a 380k plane and are plate aluminum in a fixed position. They really help with chine walk/ability to run in bigger water. Tabs recently repainted.
• Trailer is an extremely nice torsion beam venture trailer with the bunks in good shape. Trailers awesome. Lights all work. Some new LED marker lights and a new 2” Ball Tongue recently. Bearings all gone through 2 months ago and are in great shape.
Things that would need attention:
• The Gauges are original/tired and the original gauge bezels and steering wheel do not match the second restoration paint & interior (gold vs red). Likely changing to newer gauges with a newer red steering wheel would be a good project for the new owner.
• Has JL audio nice speakers throughout with a small amplifier but would need a new marine headunit/harness.
• There a few paint chips/cracks in the paint that could use a touch up above the rub rail. Finding a body shop with a paint match camera for touch up paint would be great. Mostly around the cleats, likely from lines rubbing. The red stripes are over the original gold/brown and could be taped off and repainted over winter to be perfect.
• Trailer wheels are white steel and beginning to rust. Having them blasted and powdercoated or painted and the tires remounted would be a good project for the new owner.
• Original Drum brakes are present on the trailer but would need a new brake line ran and a brake actuator tongue installed to have working brakes. Currently has a solid tongue on it for a 2” ball with no brake actuation. Boat lives in a waterfront location and moves 15 foot at a time. For someone moving further with it, may be a project they want to undertake. Boat weighs nothing and easily stopped with a truck, but if you are trailering far, something to note.
Clean and Clear Title for the boat & trailer. Original MD Registration stickers and APBA stickers from racing days still present. Unfortunately ended up with a 42’ Fountain and a 28’ Apache in the midst of owning this and some things just need to go, need the space.
$18,250 OBO. Sea tests welcomed with proof of funds. Boat is located in Chesapeake City, MD.
