Mercury Racing has introduced new V6 R-series outboard engines, the 150R and 200R models, each displacing 3.4 liters and designed specifically for high torque and acceleration. These V6 engines are based on the same platform as Mercury's larger V8 through V12 engines, optimized for exceptional hole shot and lightweight power delivery without the bulk of a V8. The 150R develops up to 6000 rpm while the 200R reaches 6400 rpm, both featuring advanced Mercury Marine technologies like Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), Active Trim, Adaptive Speed Control, and Advanced Range Optimization. These models run efficiently on 87-octane fuel, unlike many performance outboards requiring premium fuel, which can save owners money at the pump. The 200R engine comes with two gearcase options: the Torque Master, weighing about 469 pounds, targeted at competitive bass and performance boats running at 80-85 mph; and the Sport Master, at 489 pounds, aimed at high-performance boats capable of speeds exceeding 100 mph. The 150R is a lighter option with shaft lengths of 20 and 25 inches suited for various high-performance RIBs and runabouts. Both engines include larger 85-amp alternators versus competitive outboards with 44-55 amp output, supported by Mercury's battery management system to maintain ample electrical power onboard. The engines’ design includes a 64-degree V6 with 24-valve dual overhead camshafts, balancing power output with smooth operation. Mercury Racing’s push into the V6 market expands their R-Series lineup, traditionally dominated by V8 and V10 powerplants, responding to customer demand for a wider range of high-tech, high-performance outboards. According to Mercury Marine’s president, these engines blend racing DNA and sophisticated technology to deliver best-in-class bottom-end torque and seamless control. The 150R and 200R V6 models are set to provide exciting options for boaters seeking powerful, efficient, and compact propulsion solutions, while new color options and a mid-range 105hp jet engine were also announced to enhance Mercury’s offerings at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival.
