Have a 1980 Switzer SS170. Noticed some black water running out of the drain last year so my dad an I decided it was time to restore the boat. I did some research and found outasite did a thread on his rebuild https://www.screamandfly.com/showthread.php?324897-Switzercraft-SS170-transom-rebuild. After reading his and pulling the deck off ours, the original build up is completely different. On our boat, the transom looks to be 2 inverted triangles of different dimensions laminated together and the there is a 1" thing later of a white ceramic type material that went between the top of the transom and the deck, and it was also between the from of the transom and the back of the splash well. Also found on ours that there is a layup of material on the outer curved sections from the edge of the transom to outer edge of the boat. This boat came with swim steps, possibly and extra layup for strength? The biggest question we have now, is do we try and recreate the way it was, or go with a standard rectangular shaped transom and build is a little thicker and taller to make good contact with the deck and splash well. We also found the entire center stringer was completely water saturated and that needs to be done as well.
As far as materials go, we are thinking about doing a layup of coosa board for the transom. As far as the center stringer is concerned, what would be the best material to use? Factory was plywood which we are wanting to stay away from.
