Surfacing a 260hp outboard is hard on them... 1,000hp big-block must be a little worse?

Every time that prop comes out of the water and slaps the surface as it goes back in it creates vibrations and harmonics that wreak havoc on your whole motor. when your boat enters and exits the water over wakes and waves (whether you catch air or not) the loads are tremendous. This is why the outboard cases are getting bigger and bigger. Bigger boats are harder on them too. It has to be designed to hold up through all the abuse and then some. Then theres not much variety out there so companies have little to no competition and can charge whatever they like. Alot of the weight of the boat is riding on your drive at higher speeds. Im no engineer but your drive is a very critical part of a fast boat. Not saying the prices are justified, it hurts when I see the prices as well.
