Looking for suggestions I am installing Delrin solid mounts in this engine. The lowers went in fine seem to fit snug but went right together.
The uppers are a different story. When I try to install the upper part of the 2 piece plate it won’t fit down snug onto the gasket. I can install the bolts and tighten them carefully you can see that it doesn’t draw down onto the gasket.
Is it sometimes necessary to custom fit these mounts by removing material from the mount where needed?

I have taken a file to the edges of the mounts before. It may only need for you to hit them in place with a no bounce hammer. I found it helpful to support the drivehousing or gearcase with something. Hold it up firmly in place. You can hear when the mounts bottom out.

Be sure there is zero aluminum corrosion in the mounting cups as well. Even a slight amount can cause it to not seat. It's a balance for sure, takes a few tries to get it seated together, yet mounting bolts tight. Like Jim said, support from the bottom helps a lot, I used a jack with a soft rubber on the skeg.

You need to support the bottom of the midsection. Make sure the bottom yoke has not dropped on the spline. If it drops down, the spacing between the lower mounts and upper mounts will be off and will stop the two plates from sandwiching the mounts correctly. Make sure the bosses where the mounts sit are extremely clean. Use a piece of wood on the top plate to hit with a hammer to seat the two plates together. Do not hit the plate directly with a hammer. Then tighten the bolts. Hit it again. Tighten the bolts again. I do that 3 times and never had a problem.

Slight hijack…
I can see where solid mounts might waste less energy when it comes to racing and provide better handling feel at high speeds. Does it also come with any detectable harshness or noise or maintenance demands? Or is it a clean win for most people even recreational boaters?

My experience is that there is a noticeable vibration but in every case it improves the handling.

There have been lots of issues making solid uppers fit in a 2 pc plate. Just do a search here for "leaking upper mounts" and you will find endless evidence. You gotta make that fit flat before you bolt it all together or it WILL leak. Lots of people report having to shave down the mounts to make em fit right. Pain to have to do to a new part that one would assume would fit out of the box...they don't.

just went through this myself. I ran a small amount of great stuff around the water hole in between the two halves. The dead blow hammer while supporting the lower unit worked slick for me. One good whack each and the mounts were set. No nvh at all with my new boat. My last one the solid mounts made a very obvious vibration at low speeds. I didn’t like it. My new rig is smooth as butter
