Finished taking my 2.5 260 horn motor apart today after a rod went thru the block on #6. The bottom crank seal was sucking water and air and that's the story. The block is probably not worth fixing but who knows. If you need parts let me know. This engine was built by Diamond Marine and had 8 hours on it. The gold rings look as new. The crank is perfect. Four perfect pistons and rods. One piston could probably be used but it has a couple of spots where it got gouged a little.

8 hours on the motor? Not even broken in yet. Why was the bottom crank seal leaking with 8 hours on the motor? Threw a rod and the crank in perfect? Something doesn't seem right.

In my experience engine builds fail right after break in or close to it. Or they wear out from age. Or they grenade from abuse. I'd say fresh build failures are my most common failure. Having to rebuild a fresh motor sucks. Having to do it a third time really tests a mans mettle. As the saying goes if you aint breakin? You aint racin. I'm new to mercs and building OB's but plenty of other carnage in my past two smokes and fours. I'm sure plenty here can echo this experience.
