Mine always ran to 7000. Seemed to make max torque at 6800 and that was where I had stuff propped at. Best two stroke to ever come out of Mercury in my opinion.

I never owned a 300X have run bunches of 3 litre Pro Max 300s. I seem to remember several items that put the motor in limp mode, Limp mode was 1000 to 2000 rpm (wild guess) It was so you could get out of traffic and not get run over. once you established that nothing was going to ruin your motor (loss of oil, water pressure, etc) you could head back in if you wanted to. A lot of issues were electrical (sending units, low oil in oil bag, etc.) Max rpm 6800 to 7200 was prop and tune. an engine that would not reach its max rpm could have fuel problems, timing problems, ignition problems. That's all I've got. ;)
