Long story short i have a xr4 lower and after reading the horror stories i will not be putting a nose cone that i just bought on that unit.
Question comes with if you had a pile of various lower units from various year and hp engines which would you grab to weld a nose cone/lwp on? im reading the xr6 could possible accept SM internals? Let me know some thoughts.

A coned XR4 lower unit would be fast. The XR6 unit would be equally fast, and maybe a bit less fragile. I blew up 3 or 4 XR4 lowers, but never tried an XR6. A guy named Steckbauer used to put the heavy duty internals in the small case - I am not sure if shifting was preserved. Maybe an XR6 case with a Geigertec bearing carrier would last.
My ‘upgrade’ was to an old CLE, and that propshaft broke. Age and use take a toll.
I am running a Sportmaster now.

A ratcheting, non preload driveshaft case, with 1.87 gears. Typically found on 175, 200hp, and possibly xr6, from mid eighties thru mid nineties, they are numbered 1647 9147 with c or c1.

There is a thread here somewhere showing how to cone the CLE and run the water through the bullet instead of using the external hose... that was pretty cool.

late 80s early 90 1647-9147-C probably going to be one without the small plastic cover over the side water inlets and without the rectangular aluminum anode at the top, it will have slots instead of the anode
they usually come on the 135 150 175 200 carb or efi engines 2.0 and 2.5 with the one piece, non-oring heads, the fishing engine covers that say OFFSHORE which are drop on square style not clamshell or the newer 2000s rounded covers
