ill just put this out there, a single piston clamp puts the steering swivel 9 1/2'' from transom. a late model 3piston puts the swivel back 7 1/2''. 2'' set-back difference, just from changing mids/clamps.a noticeable difference on a light fast boat. i never knew that. is that common knowledge ?

Not true. i know about the 15'' i have std old single piston theres a 2'' difference than my 96 pmax. both 20'' s.piston motor is a mid 1980s,stock. side by side you can see pmax is closer to the transom. i got the tape out!

maybe so... i've changed hi perf. to production and vice versa mids on many, many boat/motor combinations (hot rods) never measuring any of 'em but never noticed any change in tha way tha boat handled.... never noticed any change in steering cable and/or shift, throttle cable lengths???.. doubt it would effect those anyway... how old is tha single ram ya talkin' 'bout?.............. jmo.
all these years on this and other merc sites thats something i've never heard discussed on any forum......

Hmmm. The center of swivel pin appears to be about 4" or 5" behind the transom bracket on a 82 single ram, and the newer 3 rams that I have. Kind of hard to measure, but they look the same to me.

Measuring to the swivel pin is not a good place to measure to cause that is trim dependent. I bet Art has his single ram clamp trimmed up more that the 3 ram. Thats just my best guess. True way to measure is to the gearcase (nose, propshaft, trailing edge of bullet...) with the motor dead level with the pad of the boat.

don't have anything here ta even look at! would think a 2" difference in set back would be with tha transom brackets or tha swivel bracket or maybe combination of both.... 2" difference should be pretty obvious......
i do know that a 2" difference on some of rigs we ran would be noticed at tha get go..... wish i'd paid more attention back then.. something i jus took for granted!

I guess my first comment was a bit premature. Looks like about 1" difference where I measured. After thinking about 25's post, could very well be 2" at the prop.
