If your talking about a old merc v6?.... the driveshaft adapter makes it alot easier , part 91-90094.
Don't forget the loctite on the pinion nut.

The pinion nut like he asked is 7/8" works as good as the pinion nut tool merc made lol. A socket even goes on there if you pull the shift shaft and the propshaft out. A driveshaft holding tool is critical...pipe wrenches are not preferred.
The driveshaft nut tool you will also need should be bought, making one is a pain.

91-90094 i got off ebay for 38.00 bucks or so. Also got the shift shaft tool for 13.00, bearing retainer wrench for driveshaft for 26.00, and 36.00 for the carrier retainer nut tool. I use a small chain and a 3 jaw puller to remove the carrier, way cheaper than the slid hammer tool. side note found a prop shaft seal tool for fishing seals on amazon for 20.00. Been using a socket but though i would try the tool next time!

I took a 7/8 box wrench and ground the face down to make it thinner and fit between pinion and the propshaft. The flat surface of the ground face (no chamfer) lets it grip the thin pinion nut better.
