Hi,
i have my seats mounted directly to the floor with some shady old consoles from the prev owner.
Decided to replace those and wanted to install some sort of a shockabsorber. Since i dont have much "height" to spare, i was thinking about putting some PU or foampads or maybe silicone between the seatrail and the floor. Goal is not to have a buttersmooth ride, but to save my back from injuries or pain :D
Does anyone had build something similar already?

Not exactly what you were asking about, but maybe an option?

that is intresting, although not cheap. Ill keep it in mind.
Did you tried that out yet? Is it really that good / worth the money?

A lot of homebuiit/experimental aircraft use it... I first saw it at the EAA in Oshkosh man years ago. I haven't used it myself. Lots of other options here: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pnpages/01-09300.php

What kind of seat do you have?
This is the foam I use for my seats- seats made out of wood, fiberglass gokart seats, or aluminum kirkeys:

I use this for all my seats- boats and kayaks. Good stuff. I use 2" on bottom and 1/2"-1" on sides, depending on how much space I need to take up with a lifejacket on. The foam is stiff just sitting on it, but that's good for when you get slammed and it compresses more. clue it together with contact cement to get as wide as you need + contact cement to glue it to the seat.
The other option is look into suspension 4x4 seats:

I have Bride low max from my racecar. Theyre full bucket seats with already a foam layer on where you seat. So i dont know if its worth putting that aircraft foam inside the cushion (or unterneath it). I could imagine its only working if you actually seat directly on it - without additional foam from the cushion.
I was thinking of putting a piece of rubber underneath the seatrail but yea, unsure of if this will work at all :D (or has an actual effect)

I have used the rubber mounts that look like a hockey puck with a stud coming out of each face... but they are only good for vibration, they don't cushion at all (that I could tell).

I do think the aircraft seat foam is "special" but it's also expensive.
Sorry, not much re your actual question. :nonod:

there are a lot of good ideas here with some closed cell foam under your butt. the best solution is in the throttle decision making or a stand up vessel.

I lived in Oshkosh as a kid, went every year... and a few times after moving away. I drive past a couple times a week but haven't braved the crowds in a long, long time. My dad was also a pilot and my mom had her license.

Good to know they only dampen vibration. Actually im leaning towards that foam. I could have my mum stitch it inside the seat cushion.

Quite true. My boat is crazy tail heavy (big engine on a 18ft boat), so at cruise speed its rocking in and out of the water. Its not brutal or backhurting, but annoying. So theres always some movement. Ill try the seats and see how it is (not installed yet). But youre right, probably the best to just reduce the throttle

...coil springs sound funny, but hey, bet they'd work if you could find just the right one's...;)...

unless you want real speed, that go-kart style seat with ALL the wave impacts on the base of your spine is for the birds. i am doing a center console conversion.

I can't imagine letting the seat get a run towards the end of your mounting stud and having it live. I would opt for a solid mounting point and go with extra foam. Mike at Fineline interiors did our race boat seats and the extra layer of dense foam that he added to our sparco seats made an incredible difference.

Look through a picture book catalog (gotta find an old mom and pop auto parts store) for motor mounts and suspension bushings...Find something like the front rearmost control arm bushing on a 87 jetta...very compliant, but look for that type of bushing in a motor mount or some sort of cage that you can hard bolt to your mounting surface as well as your seat. You don't want fastener tension to change as the cushion compresses. I'm sure there's something that will work...might have to do some fab work to create a housing for a bushing.
