top rod made a window. yet it is still connected to the piston and the crank. bearings look ok. motor turns free until the rod hits the block right at the window. and i pulled exhaust cover and you can see the top 2 liners down about a half inch. overheat cause this?

Yes........a mess........
Might be one of them variable timing ... prototypes.
If not, push em back where they belong ... and pin em in place .. :leaving:

I am putting a 3 or 4 cyl powerhead on the mid. I have 2 90’s and 2 115’s. Tryna find best combo of power and weight for an 18 Allison flats boat. Also have an XR6, but too old to be flipping 675 lb boats over. 97. Is that early? And is there a way to pin the sleeves in so they stay put?

Autopsy photos. Top 2 sleeves dropped. #2 ripped top of piston when rings caught the top of sleeve. #1 dropped far enough to put broken sleeve parts thru side of block. Looks like 3 dropped a tiny bit but didn’t get far enough to make additional mess. I tried driving the sleeve back in. It doesn’t move. That means it was probably seriously overheated to make the block grow enough that the sleeve could let go. The guy had just bought the boat and put it in the water and drove it another example of always do the water pump before you do anything else with the boat you just bought.
