installing a new waterpump in my 225, i noticed quite a bit of up and down play, like 3/16''. prop shaft only a bit in and out, unit is in neutral, gearcase upright. i can wobble that top roller bearing when pull up on the driveshaft. is that play normal? its a rachet 1.87 2-1 case. magnetic drain screw clean, no metal, no water. before storage unit worked fine. under load, will the shaft push up or pull down? dont want any trouble after i bolt it up. thanks,ART. I have a pin pertruding on top of shaft, is that considered a preload gearcase?

EDIT: I think I was mistaken on the information I provided.

If you have a pin on top of driveshaft it was gears that attract when spinning. The bearing loads and centers when you push it down.

On cases with no pin gears repel and the bearing loads and centers when you pull it up.

225?.. 2.4? pin in tha top is pre-load.. very early model 2.0/2.4's.. went away sometime in mid ta late eighties best i remember.... movement is normal until its loaded (installed).........................

Can someone explain this pin to me? Picture maybe? I've always known pre-loaded cases to be those with 2 bearing driveshafts, where the bearings ger loaded by the torque applied to the driveshaft bearing carrier.

Well that certainly is interesting. First time I have seen that.

This particular preload shaft is broken at the pinion, they were smaller diameter down there, and had reversed taper bearings at the top.

should be a 2 ta 1 then.. start in gear will help with longevity.. jmo.

The only difference i see this early case, the fill and vent are on the port side. some time ago i ran a 2-1 and loved the acceleration, lots of torque. i can run a 28p, if i put it under my 2.5. i duplicated a sporty skeg, looks sweet.

Sounds like fun!
The play up and down is normal.
Regarding cases, they're different, preload vs not. Some parts are interchangeable, but not all.

The pin case is weaker.....
