No serial number

I acquired a powerhead has a date code of 2209 FF there’s no serial number stamped into the Welch plug why is this? Thanks for your help guys

Possibly the block was replaced with a new factory block at some point? I think somebody here said the dealer who sold the new block is supposed to stamp the s/n from the old block on once it's sold but not all did?

didn't necessarily hafta be an old number (may/may not be a replacement) but is "supposedly" assigned a number from merc but usually didn't get stamped.. there is lotta things that were supposed ta be done by merc and/or merc dealers that never happened............... jmo.
