Another question, ‘74 1500 J block. How do you determine if the three labrynth seals are any good? Nothing in the Mercury service manual. They kinda wobble a little on the crankshaft. And I see they are NLA. I have it this far apart so I’m checking everything. Thanks

From what I've read, the motor won't start or idle well if they are worn.

Hears a pic of good and bad
Bad top good bottom
You can see the square edges on the bottom and rolled over on the top
Usually big rpm and crank flex kills them.
Thats why TIIs use 7 bearings instead of 4 like your XS
New ones might do some good but not for that kind of money.

Thought I saw somewhere where a guy put a rubber o-ring on the crank where the seal rings are, I never could figure out how he got the o-rings on the crank.

Can use o-rings or machine accommodations for a seal cut in half. $400 is a bit ruff but if you have the only one you can name your price. It's either new cages or a couple dozen eggs. Your call.

if i remember right there is a nominal clearance of about .007 mils on each side of the crank to seal area. Difference in overall diameter would be .014 if it was NOS. Have run them up to about .030 overall clearance with no discernable issue. Like it was previously mentioned, you will notice very hard cranking and idle when they are worn out.

there was also a guy a few years back that machined a new insert to fit in to correct worn our ones. You had to send him your old reed blocks and he fixed them up. Looking for his name, wasnt too cheap though.
