Hi all,

Im getting a new 22f boat built in Australia. its a lightweight glass 21deg pad bottom.

The boat builder has mentioned he does like suzuki outboards on it due to the gear box ratio. Whilst im not disbelieving his at all as he knows his own boats. Im wondering is anyone else has had issues with lower ratio of the suzuki?

The boat builder says the issue is heavy steering above 50-60mph and lots of blow out.. he needs to run the suzuki 2-3inches lower in the water than merc or yamaha.

Id imagine this is due to the larger pitch and slow turning speeds of the suzuki?

thoughts?

There is some good information about Suzuki's here: Suzuki VS Honda: How do the Underdogs in the Marine Industry Outboard Market Compare? — Wave To Wave (https://www.wavetowave.com/home/2022/4/3/suzuki-vs-honda-how-do-the-underdogs-in-the-marine-industry-outboard-market-compare)

From my own experience, my 20' V bottom (Allison SS2000) is easier to drive with smaller pitch props. Easier meaning less steering input required.

If it's a fast boat, which it sounds like, suzuki's suck do to their gear ratio. Put a Mercury on it and don't look back.

There is more information needed for your question. Are you going to be running a jack plate? If so, how much set back? A plate can help with the raised engine height and blow out. What type of top speed do you want? Look up a prop slip calculator, plug in your numbers and see the difference. Just guessing but you will probably find a difference between the Suzuki with it’s 2.29 gears and Yamaha or Mercury of somewhere in the area of 15 mph or more.

IF your looking for speed, on a light hull, forget the suki. had a new 175 2.5+1 gear. the low end torque will snap your neck. you can pull a house down. it was on a 23 cc, 1700lbs. i could only jack it up at w o t , for shallow water with no speedincrease. great fuel economy and quiet, super smooth no vibration the rolls of outboards, if you want a corvette, get a merc.
