In winter here in Ohio, basically it gets cold and the sun goes away for 4 months and the wife puts me on suicide watch until Spring!
I think it was Rock that posted a similar thread last winter about what to do to stay sane.
I have a new vice for this winter.
TV!
W/cutting the cable and going the antenna (free) route, we got the ROKU streaming service which is really cool.
I am hooked on the “Engine Masters” series.
Started 20 or so yrs ago as an annual contest in a car mag and developed its own life.
The orig series set different rules each year on engine parameters and each team would build a dyno motor to be tested against all comers.
Saw some very creative combinations accordingly!
Now it’s a TV doccu series!
Three really smart guys test every imaginable theory on a dyno.
Really is good stuff!
They have tested a ton of the well known myths and proven 1/2of them to be wrong!
Im now going through the Hot Rod “Drag Week” series where they have street legal race cars drag trace each other then drive to the next track and do it again, all wk long!
Best part is the cars aren’t allowed to be trailered/towed!
There are guys doing this well into the 6’s!
Just watched a diesel powered square body C-10 go 10.40!
Only 4 months to go!

I've lived here in Ohio for a lot of years. i used to ride snowmobiles in the winter. Then I got old and I don't really like the cold anymore so that's out. So TV and alcohol it is!:D. A lot of cool stuff like boat racing and car restoration stuff on Utube.

Cool. Is that via internet? Because mine SUCKS!!!
Wait until my old Dodge gets out of the shop. I am now thinking high 12s with a 2500 4X4 crew cab. Trying to find out how much boost I can make before it pops the head.
Already looking a new motor.

I've been streaming for over a year now. Have a 4k firestick on one TV and a direct internet connection to the other. Watching hulu, roku, amazon prime TV and Netflix. All in for about a hundred dollars. Cable was $300+. No regrets cutting the cord. I have 1gb up and down for internet.
Been there, done that….and like Skipe…… moved to the Carolina’s
Good luck, Gator….. next time I’m in your area we need to meet for a beer (s) in Waldo.

We are using ROKU for $9 a month and stream it through a hot spot on our phones.
Like Paul, we are in the stix and basically w/out internet.
We are still on 30 day free trial for Motortrend tv and just got an offer of $45 for a yr which is only $4 a month.
We are hooked on the series Yellowstone and they have it wrapped tight and are paying $3 per episode so, $12 a month so at $25 per.
Only thing I miss from cable is being able to record and replay shows.
We tried a $30 box from Menards, advertised as doing that but it only saw 1/3 of our channels so we returned that.
Back to the winter blues, I do have a shop full of projects to keep me busy.
Still totally infatuated w/my MG, plenty to do on the Convincor, a V-8 taunting me every time I walk past it and a Water Buffalo waiting on me to go through the motor.

You have any snow? Just cold, wet, and MUDDY here. I have a ceramic heater running under my desk. Supposed to get to 28 tonight and 16 on the 24th. Yay!!!! :o
Monday I am going to fill up several propane bottles. I have a dual burner Mr Heater that works really well.
Too cold in the garage to do anything without heat. My split unit is a heat pump but once the temp gets below 45F, they suck and are very inefficient.

Damn! F' that negative chit!!! And 13 is cold for here.
You can be assured there will be frozen pipes, water leaking every where and a loss of water pressure just like a few years ago when it was 17 for about 4 days in a row.
None of the ghetto shacks in town still do not have pipe insulation is my bet. Just wait. I'll put money on this. And they will sit around and whine and cry. The 80+% in town will never learn.
Just like they do their cars. Drive them until the wheels fall off.
Received another 3.5" last week. Nice muddy and cold.
Forecast for here. Not supposed to get above freezing until the 25th.

Supposed to hit tomorrow night and lock us down for two days.
We see it as, it’s an excuse to do nothing!
Fridge is stocked, bar is stocked…, bring it!

Out here in Iowa the front edge of the blizzard is just reaching us. Later today the temp is dropping to -15, the wind will crank up to 27 sustained with 50 mph gusts. That’s -50 windchill. All with about six inches of snow.
Seeing this mess coming I went to the store a few days ago to stock up. While the normals were getting their milk, eggs and bread I was buying a handle of vodka, a handle of rum and a case of beer.

I did work on a seismic boat off the North Slope of Alaska back in 1990; Harrison Bay and Camden Bay, IIRC. Granted it was from June to Oct. But I did get to experience a few frozen beards. And plenty of first stage frost bite on my hands. Not fun reeling in seismic cable out of the water when the cold temps. started.
It snowed every day for the first two weeks in Sept. and never snowed again. Lot of ice though. In fact that is what determines the end of the season up there. When the water starts freezing and it gets to sheet ice that's so thick the seismic guns get drug out of the water and on top of the sheets of ice we called it quits.
I worked 3 1/2 months straight on that 115ft. boat. The high was 10 deg. the day we left and it felt like low 30's down here in south Louisiana.

15 here at 10AM. I took an old foam ice chest, but a hole in it and stuffed it full of towels and put it on the south side of the house out of the wind. Been feeding them as much as they will eat also.
Been running the infrared propane heater all morning on high. Dog is sleeping in front of it.
Dog is a good bed dog. I call him the "Bed Hog Dog" because I find myself on the edge. I try to point his feet away from me. When he starts dreaming he will kick the chit out of you.

I was wondering how that was going. I am lucky with mine. He cost me a good bit at first with meds... had Lyme's disease.... TWICE. But all is goo now.

I got a new pup last spring, after my old dog kicked the bucket. Sure turned out to be a handful. Came down with parvo at six months, cost me a small fortune! Luckily

Yep.
Wanted to drive up to see but wife says it too cold.
When the wind comes out of the south, it sucks the water out of the south coast of Erie.
Did it several yrs back but in season.
Thousands of boats and docks sitting on dry lake bottom!
On Pelee, I fantasized of owning a house there.
But after 4 decades of boat/visiting there, it is a good way to see an out of touch government destroy a tiny community w/it’s big city directives.
A friend has a third generation beach front cottage there and due to Covid, and being a Yankee, he was not allowed to visit there for 2 yrs!
Yrs ago, the Plain Dealer (Cleveland newspaper) sent a reporter there to spend a winter w/her teen age daughter and write about it.
I couldn’t wait for her entries to be posted each wk!
Ended up writing a book about her experience, which I bought and read.
Middle Island, is the next island south of Pelee, still in Canadian water and uninhabited.
Came up for sale a couple decades back but….
Anyhow, in books on the history of the islands, there has been mentioned, that Middle island was a stopover point for bootleggers from Canada during the prohibition era.
Supposedly is remains of the foundation for the speakeasy/bordello owned by the big mobster of the era.
I have never met, read any first hand evidence of its existence.
20 yrs ago I anchored off the island then dinghied in to search but failed to penetrate its thick, overgrown perimeter, in my swimsuit and flip flops
Using recent satellite images of the island I have found what appears to be ruins of a foundation though, opposite side of island that they thought.
Next summer I’ll try again, this time w/hiking boots and a machete!
Very, very rich history up there.
Starting with Indians dragging white folks into the woods, never to be seen again.

I hear ya on the water being blown out. Went fishing on Calcasieu Lake one day, and then into the marsh. On the Big Lake side. It pulled the water out of the marsh, and the lake was rolling. So shallow we couldn't even get the flat boat on plane. So we got as close as we could, put the push pole in the mud, tied the boat to it, AND WALKED OUT!!! THROUGH THE MARSH!!!
The bad thing was, WE HAD TO WALK BACK OUT THERE TO GET THE BOAT the next day. :o
And once we got there, we just went back to fishing for red fish in the marsh.
CDave knows. He lives down there.
