So my Etec had a drain plug with a stripped head. I got it out.
The only other extra drain plug I have is a Mercury plug. Threads are the same and it went in OK.
But- the OMC uses a flexible clear plastic gasket and Mercury uses a hard rubber? based gasket.
Are these interchangeable? Or am I missing something?
Thanks

I would do it. It's just a simple gasket.

Ya the OMC gasket looks real cheap. They should be a nickel.

Mercury and omc have used lots of different oil drain plug gasket materials over the years. Yes they interchange as long as your evinrude drain plug does not have a shoulder for an oring. The thread is a 3/8-16 just fyi in case you ever need to tap it or helicoil it. It is not a tapered thread.
I know you mentioned you were using a merc drain plug, so yes mercury blue or yellow washers would work. The blue ones are pretty much one time use and are made of a gasket material, the yellow ones are a rubber coated metal that last about 10 uses as long as you don't gorilla-grip them in.
In any case, for anyone looking at this thread down the road, make sure if you use mercury oil drain plug washers in an omc make sure you are NOT using a drain plug that is cut to hold an oring as the sealer instead of a washer. If you use an oring plug without and oring and with a washer it will eat it to shreds cause of the sharp shoulder.
