2.4 BP Starter Question

On my 1988 2.4 BP when I go to start it most of the time if the engine does not start right now, the starter gear kicks back out and you have to try again. Very rarely will the starter keep spinning the motor Even if the battery is on the charger it tends to do this. What should I look for.

Check to see if the bendix might be slipping and if the shaft is clean but well lubricate. If the bendix gets oil in it it will slip allowing the motor to kick it back out. If the initial timing is retarded enough the engine will try to start backwards causing the same kick out problem.
