1979 Hawaiian Outboard Boat Project

So the Project begins, This is a 1979 Hawaiian 21' boat, from what I know they were pretty much all jet boats but did make this one model made for an outboard for a couple years. Anyone with more info on these boats or pictures of one you have would be awesome to see/read.

My plan is to do a full composite rebuild, I will try and document as much as I can on this thread.

I am not an expert, I have never rebuild a boat like this- So any and all comments will be taken and good criticism - I also might do something that could be done better, I will post about it and then do better next time!

Awesome looking boat, I had neve touched fiberglass either before my rebuild. This one should be a cool build.

very nice lines , always loved the west coast Daycruiser style boats, even has a pad bottom ! ought to be a good runner , and those tanks are awsome , good range between fillups :thumbsup:

Definatly take a hard look at the wood in the transom , looks like the stringers are shot

I got the old transom wood out and did some grinding on the hull from where the old fiberglass from the stringers and transom were bonded. I plan on doing 3 pieces of 3/4" coosa board for the transom, I think one piece of 2" would be a lot easier but I already have a bunch of 3/4" already here.

Couple questions that you all might have good answers to:

The boat originally had saddle tanks but I would rather extend that back deck area and do an aluminum tank center with the transom, I was thinking around 30gal. This will keep the weight back and centered I believe and I will not have to have fuel lines with a T running to the back.

Also I know this is a page where fuel injected racing two strokes are the way, but I have a 2020 150hp Tohatsu/honda here ready to mount on the boat. I'm leaning toward doing a low water pick up on its gear case and seeing what it will do! I don't have plans on racing this boat, just want it to be in the 60-70mph range if possible and be comfortable. Let me know what you guys think!

I don’t think 150 HP is enough. I have two direct injected 2 strokes and they are fuel efficient

This is going to be a very cool build. Definitely post a lot of pics! Sadly, I agree that 150 hp is most probably not going to get you where you want to be. It is certainly worth bolting on and trying and having fun with that if you want to post a big speed number, you probably need 75 more horsepower. Your boat is definitely not a potato chip.

Been extremely busy with work but it looks like we are back on the horse and moving forward. I got the transom laminated to the boat. I used 2 layers of 1.5oz csm and have plans of going overtop and around with 2-3 layers of 1708 bi axial. I have also started to see a number of some of these offshore boats running those Honda 250's. I am a Tohatsu dealer and can get a 250 Tohatsu which is a Honda at cost. I also have a good deal from a buddy on a newer 250R Merc but its quite a bit more expensive. Just playing around with engine ideas.

Got the clamp idea from all of you guys and it worked out great!

I have a smaller version of what is essentially your boat... An 18 footer. Side tanks, a hull design that is usually V8 jet or V-drive, but a few were made as outboards. Looks like this:

Mine has a 150 and I'm sure it's a good bit lighter than yours. The 150 is good for maybe 60mph with just me in it. Goes a little over 50 with wife and two little girls and our gear for the day.

Got the transom glassed in yesterday, I filled in all the gaps around the edge with a resin putty mix then ran strips of 1708 bi ax around the whole edge then covered everything with 2 layers of the 1708

Grinded out the majority of the stringers today. Boat originally had 3 stringers but I plan on just replacing two - my thoughts were, I've seen a lot of build ups that only have two and because the two will be thick pieces of coosa I would say it is good. Also when I step around in the boat I don't notice any real flex, I'm 220lbs so I imagine the hull has enough fiberglass.

I could be completely wrong, any thoughts, comments, questions, concerns will be great!

if it had three, I would go back with three. That’s just me. Did the same thing on my build. I also added two extra knees outboard of the originals. You could pick my boat up and shake it by the transom and it wouldn’t move an inch!
