They had to. 10,000ft is the limit with out O2, unless pressurized.

Hell they had planes that would fly that high during WWII. I am sure they split water or what ever they had to do.

From what I recall 12,500 MSL with a flight duration more than 30 minutes required supplemental oxygen. 14,000 full-time oxygen for pilot and crew. At 15,000 oxygen had to be available for passengers. This was for small planes. Maybe there are new rules?

Not sure. 10K is I was taught in flight school. That was 30 years ago. I worked at a Beech dealership in the late 80s. Didn't get paid for sh!t, but had fun flying Barons and Bonanzas though. Super King Airs were pretty cool too.

I still have my FAR books from 78 I will look tomorrow if I can find them. You’re right working with an A&P Lic or as A commercial pilot for small planes did not pay well.

It was only 88 years ago when Wiley Post was exploring flight as high as 50,000 ft in his Lockheed Vega using a pressure suit. I don't know if he used a separate compressor or bleed air from the engine supercharger but I suppose that was better than unpressurized with oxygen at those altitudes.

I have one of those "computers" and a knee board to go along with it!!!

Oh, and a David Clark headset with jell ear muffs. That was part of my deal, I had to hear the tower.
