Just wanting to know what year power head will fit my 1985 150hp Mariner lower unit. The lower unit is in good shape. I believe I was told this is a 2.0 liter. Is it possible two install 175-200hp on this same lower unit and have the 150hp cowling still on? Just curious and thanks for all replies.

Any of the Merc 2.4 and 2.5 V6 motors will fit your midsection. Just make sure you use the exhaust plate that goes with it.

Does that mean I could drop on any year make power head in a 2.4 or 2.5 as long as I have the proper exhaust plate or is there specific year models that I need to use? Just wanting to make sure I get it right and still be able to run the 150 cowling for insurance purposes. Thanks again. Electric Fish.

Yes, you can run any of em, but be warned: Insurance adjusters aren't stupid, and if you get into a catastrophic accident you're likely to get caught with the upgrade. If you insure a 200 (for example) as a 150 and somebody gets hurt, the company may very well deny responsibility. It's a chance that a lot of people take, so just be sure if you're gonna gamble you know what you're gamblin'.

I guess I will stick to the 150hp. A fishing buddy also pointed out that If I did win a fishing tourney that required a lie detector test and was asked about the motor complying to the boat capacity I might fail. Not worth the risk. Thanks again guy's, I now have a better idea and more options than I knew before this thread.

"A fishing buddy also pointed out that If I did win a fishing tourney that required a lie detector test ......."
You've gotta be kidding. It'd be a cold day in Hell when I'd let somebody make me take a lie detector test over a fishing tournament. Tell em you demand to see a lawyer and don't answer any questions.
