Lake Houston has gotten full of wake boats that pick the rivers for their water sports. So much for hauling ass down a nice smooth river in my mod vee bass boat. When I meet one of these boats throwing three foot wakes, there is nothing I can do except have a controlled crash into them. I Try to get out near the edges and everything else and still it’s brutal. Launched off of one of them today and landed on the face of another wave HARD. Typing this message with an aching back from the impact. Yes, I had slowed waaaaay down. Just no good way to get through it in my boat. Launch and crash or stuff the bow. Never thought I would miss the days of annoying sea doos.

I guess I should feel fortunate even though my governor and senators are window lickers to own property on the California side of the lower Colorado river, where the water is controlled by the farmers and is considered to be shallow. We have minimal wake board boats and luckily no big boy skaters that run down here. It's still old school and knowing how to navigate the river is a local thing. I still enjoy running my stand up's, pontoon and my out boards.

Yep. Those trident shaped aluminum ones are the worst. Those wakes are huge, hard, and have no break. Been swamped and airborne. No bueno

Destroyers. They tear up docks, shoreline, and bulkheads. To make matters worse they have stereos polluting what their wakes don't reach. What happened to your responsible for your wake?
They are banned in some creeks off Travis. Property owners got tired of repairing their docks.
When I was a kid ski boats were for skiiing. It was good exercise. Wake boards came out and ariel tricks were the thing. Kinda cool. Now its surfing. Woo who look at me! I can stand up without a rope!

I HATE THEM!!!! Here in Spring Lake they have a no wake for anything over 26ft because of the damage the larger boats do to the shoreline and docks. Now you have these damn wake boats making the same wake as a damn 50ft SeaRay. It boggles my mind that they are not ticketed the same as a large boat doing the same damage.
I get out at about 7am and have fun making runs till they get out at about 10am and then I am done for they day in some cases.

I go out early on weekends. Either ski or A-boat, starting at 8 and off the water by 10. Between wind driven waves, cruiser traffic, and today's bigger runabouts, boating for me is early. Wakeboats are not much of a problem for me. The only local one runs mid afternoon when I could never go fast or ski anyway.

Sadly I too chase times on the water when the crowds are away. Early am weekdays seems best. Not always easy to get out on those days though. Weekends are for cruising only nowadays. Hard to find some calm waters

Yep gotta run early AM or way up river to get away from them in the summer. Especially on a holiday weekend. The worst thing about them is that the waves travel and take forever to dissipate. You can get launched into the air by their waves without ever seeing the boat or the waves until its too late... Or in one case for me I saw the wake boat but it was just sitting still with a jet ski tied up to it so I thought I was in the clear.. But he must have just shut it down before I rounded the bend in the lake... Went for a decent little ride.

I hate these things. Especially the tube aluminum bridges where they can show off their collection of boards and elevate their sound speakers to broadcast their noise to others who don't want to hear it! I call them "combat boats". Was a problem to begin with when they would barely fit in a garage on the trailer. Worse now with the tube bridges that don't fold down and they are parked outdoors 24/7. Most of these morons do not have garages with 10-12 ft doors either. Blame the dealers for selling this crap to begin with. They should tack on a nuisance surcharge for every one sold.

I call em, "pig boats".
I find great pleasure getting up real early, and screaming a 2 stroke in their ear while it's laying on a pillow.
When I do get stuck running with them, I have a hard time not flipping em the bird as i slow down to 7mph while overtaking the wake, and they wave at me. Come to think about it, I do flip em the bird.:D

Same issue here in Western NY. I usually boat on the Niagara River which is large enough so that I can just avoid them in my 18 ft rig.....but I also like to fish on a small 600 acre inland lake using a little 14 ft aluminum with a 15 hp. Of course, it seems like every cottage owner on this tiny lake has to have either a wake boat or a 23-25 ft pontoon boat throwing a big wake on about 1/2 plane. Its bad enough so that I have to fish only during the week. I'm hoping the high gas prices this year will keep the wake throwing idiots at the dock!
I keep an 8 inch long "Muskie" lure in my fishing box to cast at anyone who comes too close- the people being towed get quite upset when they see the big lure with 4 treble hooks coming at them- so they cuss at me but tend to stay away. In NY its illegal to be on plane close to a stopped boat so they can't go to the cops and complain.

Under general Admiralty and Maritime law a boat owner is responsible for damage caused by their wake.
“A vessel causing injury to others by her swell or wake is held responsible for any failure to appreciate the reasonable effect of her own speed and motion through the water at the particular place and under the particular circumstances where the injury occurred. Her officers are required to take all reasonable precautions to avoid injury to another vessel, including crew or passengers. All reasonable precautions must be taken even though past experience has shown that in the ordinary and usual course of events they are likely to escape injury.”
A group of waterfront home owners or individual boat owners could sue for damage caused by these pig boats. Also a state legislature would have ample justification for regulating these menaces to the public.

That's exactly what I try to do - or just before dark. Had to do yard chores yesterday before I could go to the lake.

Get a 22-24 OS boat with a steep deadrise and you won't have that problem. ;)
You sound like my wife! lol She hates going with me when it's not glass. Yesterday made me long for the days of my old Baja. That thing would cut a wake like butter and if you did launch a bit - like off of a barge wake - it was fun and no big deal.
Lake Houston has a LOT of shallow, stumpy water. Not uncommon to see 2'-3' on the graph in the middle of the lake in what looks like should be deep water. I've gotten spoiled with being 1" above pad. Would be a bit scary to run an I/O in this lake behind something cool.

So what do folks with STV's, Mirages, Hydrostreams and such do when they encounter such waves?
David

I drop off a plane and run parallel to cruiser wakes. Straight on usually works, but sometimes gets water over the bow.

Slow down, keep the bow up, and try to cross them as "parallel" as possible.
My advice is to trim way up, and roost the **** out of them ... :D
To those that say ... ban them , ticket them , etc. Be careful what you wish for !
When does government do for one , and not for everyone. :nonod:
Here in Florida, the rich people living on the Intercoastal Mansions thought their property line extended all the way to France. They found out over and over again that there property line ended at the waters edge .. and for some there was a 10' easement .. that didn't belong to them.
Then they hired some lawyers that said that fast boats were killing the Manatee (most are killed by barges on the St, Johns) Ohhh my god, they are killing the defenseless Manatee. And the state thru up miles long idle or 25 mph zones ... every ******* where. Go to court ... the manatee murderers want to open up bla-bla section's of the river ... case never gets out of first gear. No judge wants to side with freedom .. :o

I don't disagree, Chaz. A loss of freedom for any is a loss of freedom for all. So in the interim, I'll just bitch a little on here and get up early and run my potato chip up and down the lake and then put my junk back on the trailer by 10 am. Plus, I really don't care to be out on the water when you see 10 people in a boat and 11 of them are drinking beer.

THIS....is what I will NEVER understand about these boats. When I was 8 years old (before the invention of fire) a copy of Chapman's was thrust into my mitts and I was told to essentially commit it to memory. In there, and since, I have seen countless warnings about watching your wake and the possible consequences of not doing so. It's in the statutes of every state in this Union. Yet I'm still completely baffled as to when this concept of responsibility was abandoned.
If I drive my boat through another like a missile at 90 mph and kill someone, I'm charged with murder. If I flip over a kayak or small rowboat with my massive wake and drown someone, it's all just good fun?????

Down here we suffer with "river lice" (jet skies)
Wake boat / mini party barge (practicing for making the cut on the next jackazz movie)
And daddy war bucks in huge sportfishing boats (all dollars and no sense)
11 out of 10 ... LMAO .. post of the week right there ... :D :D :D
